Problem Loans: When and Where Will They Come Out of Hiding?

 

By the end of 2014, many were left with optimistic spirits for what the future holds. This feeling is justified based on the numbers alone. The GDP displayed positive growth trends for both the second and third quarters at 4.6 and 3.5%. Even more impressive are the statistics revealing the unemployment rate is under 6% since the first time since before the recession. New Basel III Capital Requirements

 

January marks the beginning of the phase-in of Basel III, a new higher minimum-capital requirements for U.S. banks. These standards are sprouting from the decision in 2010 by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision to set new global regulatory standards for bank capital adequacy, stress testing, and market liquidity risk. The standards of Basel III came about largely in response to the financial crisis and the problems many banks encountered during and after the crisis. Read more here...
Regulatory Initiative: Operation Choke Point

 

If you have no clue what Operation Choke Point even entails, chances are you will probably become familiar with it at some point this year. Banks have the potential to encounter a reputation risk thanks to this initiative launched in 2013 by the U.S. Justice Dept. The FDIC is notifying banks which businesses in certain types of industries that might be at high risk for such activities as fraud, money laundering, and terrorist financing. Read more here...
