Lessons From Childhood

Lesson 6:  Laugh

It's easy to forget to laugh.  We adults get caught up in stress, fear, and sadness.  In contrast, children pivot from worry to joy with ease and grace.  They laugh easily.

My daughter is filled with joy.  Her response to a room of tension is to make everyone laugh.   Todayas we sat in waiting rooms full of anxious 4 and 5 year - olds awaiting back - to - school health checks, she pulled shy and nervous strangers up off their benches to hold hands and dance Ring - around - the - Rosie.  While they waited for their dreaded shots, the kids, all total strangers, made friends, sang songs, played peek a boo,
and acted silly.  They laughed.

That joyful spirit was manifest in my great - aunt Eleanor, who passed away to fireworks on July 4 at the age of 91.  She led a life of joy and encouraged it in others.  Regardless of your circumstances, she'd say, you are always in control of your attitude.  People noticed something different about her:
she was happy.  And that happiness was a choice.

And so, as you go about your day today, remember that whatever you're facing,
step back and laugh.
