| Greetings!
One afternoon in my studio my two year old daughter looked up, and in the lighting and her gesture I heard a particular piece of music. To me, that particular suspended moment was the sound of the third movement of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 15, Op. 132 when the tempo first shifts from molto adagio to andante and the key from A minor to D major. In the margin of this movement, Beethoven wrote, "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart." In English this is imperfectly translated, "A convalescent's song of holy thanksgiving to the divinity, in the Lydian mode." Beethoven had been very ill, faced the worst, and gratefully celebrated a surprising recovery. The music is the sound of thanksgiving, relief, joy, and optimism. Beethoven specified the movement was to be played "with renewed strength" ("Neue Kraft fühlend.") Below is my Heiliger Dankgesang: Hope. Here's to 2013.
