Five FAFSA Myths
1. I Can't File Because I'm Not Sure If or Where I'll Go to School
You should complete the FAFSA even if you're not sure about college. Filling out the FAFSA does not commit you to anything; it just gives you the opportunity to receive cash for college.
2. The FAFSA Is Too Hard To Fill Out
The FAFSA is easier than ever and there are detailed instructions for every question. If you attend one of our College Goal Maine FAFSA completion events, we'll show you how to complete it with personalized step-by-step guidance in 30 minutes or less!
3. I Won't Qualify - My Parents Make Too Much Money
Don't assume you won't be eligible - fill out the application and find out. There is no income cut-off to qualify for federal student aid. Your eligibility is determined by a mathematical formula, not by your parents' or your income alone. When you complete the FAFSA you will automatically be considered for State of Maine Grant, and possibly funds from your school. Deadlines are important - check with your school for more information.
4. It's Too Late - I Missed the Filing Deadline
While most schools have specific financial aid deadlines, many schools offer flexible start dates. Some offer rolling admissions and allow you to start during the next enrollment period. You can always submit your FAFSA for the current school year and take advantage of upcoming start dates. Talk to the financial aid office at your school for more information on when to file the FAFSA.
5. I'm Too Old To Get Financial Aid
Adult students can get financial aid, so be sure to fill out the FAFSA. Funds from federal student aid programs are awarded on the basis of financial need, not on the basis of age. For more information about financial aid for adult students, visit FAME's nontraditional student web page.
