NCJW/Cleveland was well represented at NCJW Premier Policy Event - Washington Institute at the Omni Shoreham in Washington, D.C. We gathered with over 400 like-minded women from all over the United States. We took the issues of Gun Violence, Immigration Reform, and Women's Reproduction Rights to our legislators on The Hill.

   THIS MONTH IN NCJW/CLEVELAND'S HISTORY

In April of 1920, Council of Jewish Women made an announcement in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Council of Jewish Women Announce a Competitive Election

"The meeting will feature an annual meeting on May 2nd at the Alhambra Theatre".  The article lists the projects Council was involved in including: the settlement house for working girls, Council Educational Alliance, creation of city playgrounds, introduction of Public Librarys in the settlement houses, created fresh air camp for needy children now know as Camp Wise and the start up of Big Sister program today know as the Jewish Big Brother/Big Sister Program at Bellefaire JCB.

Message from . . .

Becky Brouman, Director of Volunteers

Dear Valued Member,

April marks the start of Volunteer month
, a nationally recognized event started in 1974 to honor people who work selflessly every day to make sure that the downtrodden are cared for and that those down on their luck have hope. In the spirit of the month, today I honor you: for the smiles you bring to the elderly and the sick with your beautiful singing, for the endless hours you spend advocating on behalf of the disenfranchised, for the hundreds of ribbons you curled and placed on gift baskets, presents, and centerpieces. For all this and more, we at NCJW/Cleveland salute and honor you. We hope to see you all at our Stanley and Hope Adelstein Volunteer Appreciation Brunch on April 10th, where we will continue our celebration of you!

SPOTS OF LIGHT - To Be a Woman in the Holocaust

"Spots of Light: To Be a Woman in the Holocaust", the first international exhibition to focus exclusively on women in the Holocaust, is more than a catalogue and also much more than an exhibition. This is a demonstration of human and feminine strengths...

Women in the Holocaust applied their minds to a place that deprived them of their minds; brought strength to a place where they had no strength. In a place where they and their families had no right to live, destined to die, they invested every second with meaning.

The exhibition is designed as a large-scale video-art-like installation, which encompasses the entire exhibition space, moves and changes before the viewer's eyes, and gives the historical materials a new and contemporary feel and perspective. Stories of 45 women are told through 10 thematic sections; Love, Motherhood, Caring for Others, Womanhood, Partisans and Underground, Everyday Life, Friendship.

Join us as we, together, view and experience this riveting exhibit.

Another Fabulous Collaboration between NCJW and TMTP: The Making of "The Music Man"

NCJW is thrilled to partner again with The Musical Theatre Project to bring another Sunday afternoon program of music and fun - this time The Making of "The Music Man" and we hope you will join us.

It almost didn't happen: Meredith Willson wrote 30 drafts over eight years before The Music Man finally saw the light of day in 1957 - and even then insiders were convinced the show was too hokey for Broadway. But Willson's charming con man, Harold Hill, not only dazzled the small town of River City, Iowa; for nearly 60 years his 76 trombones have led the parade of a great American musical. In TMTP's multi-media concert, you'll hear all of the songs introduced by Robert Preston, Barbara Cook and the Buffalo Bills - including "Goodnight, My Someone," "Ya Got Trouble," "Till There Was You" and "Lida Rose" - and the fascinating story of the musical's creation. Hosted by Bill Rudman and Nancy Maier with vocalists George Roth and Laura Lindauer.

TICKETS: $26 preferred, $20 general, $5 student. NCJW Members, however, will receive a $4 discount on the price of any preferred or general section ticket through April 19th, and will receive special reserved seating in each section.

Place:   Chagrin Falls High School Performing Arts Center

400 E Washington St. Chagrin Falls, OH 44022

(produced in association with Chagrin Arts)

            (non-member price $20)

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Patricia Averbach

We are delighted to announce that past NCJW board member, Patricia Averbach, just published a novel! Join us for the book launch of Painting Bridges on Sunday, May 5 from 4-6 p.m at Nighttown. Enjoy complimentary appetizers and passed hors d'oeuvres. Be the first to hear an excerpt from Painting Bridges accompanied by a theatrical reading by a deaf interpreter.

It's April of 1976, Samantha lost her daughter and young husband. Immobilized by grief, she's barricaded herself in a dilapidated farmhouse in Western New York. Then, unexpectedly, a deaf child with an eerie resemblance to Samantha's daughter wanders onto her property and changes everything.

This is a FREE event, and it would mean the world to Pat if you came!
