Use social media to promote preventive care

When Kingsbrook Animal Hospital in Frederick, MD, wanted to reach 1,200 Likes on Facebook, they got clients involved. During preventive care exams, technicians give clients a white board with a dry-erase maker and ask them to complete the sentence: "I heart Kingsbrook Animal Hospital because...". Employees post photos of pets with the sign on its Facebook page. Clients often snap photos on their cell phones and share on social media during exams. Click here to view the hospital's inspiring wall album.

Ranee Baker, RVT, says employees also painted "Like us on Facebook" on their car windows and promoted Likes at a 5K run/walk. Veterinarians agreed to take pies in their faces when they reached 1,200 Likes and donated $250 to its Kylie and Cricket Memorial Fund. They did it! Give kudos to Kingsbrook Animal Hospital and Like its page.

The key to a successful social media strategy is engaging clients and having ongoing conversations. Learn useful tips in our Sept. 12 webinar on "How to use social media to promote preventive care." Designed for the entire team, this webinar will teach you how to:

Script of the month:

Explaining preventive screens

Clients with apparently healthy pets may think, "My pet is well, so why do I need a wellness test?" Change your terminology from "wellness test" to "preventive screen." The purposes of screening healthy pets are to establish a baseline and to detect changes early. Technicians or assistants should present screening first, which the veterinarian then echoes. Repetition of the message increases compliance.

"Between ages 3 and 6, your adult cat is in the prime of its life. Preventive screening lets us establish a baseline of what's normal for your cat and helps detect changes early. Because cats are masters at hiding illnesses, sometimes testing is the only way to know if your cat is healthy. Catching changes early often means they will be easier and less expensive to treat. Think of blood work
as the internal physical exam that lets us check the health of organs and for feline leukemia, FIV and heartworms. We will collect a blood sample and have results during today's exam."
