Alvertha Penny
Every year, more than 700 community foundations join together during November to celebrate Community Foundation Week and the impact philanthropy has on our community. The Community Foundation of South Alabama works every day to help address the most pressing issues facing our community. We have distributed grants totaling more than $6.8 million for response and recovery from hurricanes and the oil spill. The Foundation recently launched a three-year initiative, Males Overcoming and Reaching Excellence (M.O.R.E.), designed to encourage young men ages 8-18 to stay in school, go to college, enter a vocation, and get involved with the community. Your gifts to the Community Endowment Fund will be used to help build coalitions by working with nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, and the community to address the problems affecting our young men.

| Hurricane Sandy Disaster Recovery | | | Give Back To Those Who Helped Us
As the holiday season approaches, let's not forget those struggling to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
As residents of the Gulf Coast, we all know the affects of hurricanes and the incredible destruction left in their wake.
Our neighbors have always come to our aid. Now it is our turn to give back to those in need on the East Coast.

| Today's Decisions Have A Profound Impact On The Lives Of Tomorrow | | |
Your Support Is Crucial
For many young men, misguided decision-making often results in a life plagued by violence, drugs, sexual misbehavior, and even suicide.
For the more than 50,000 young men in Baldwin, Clarke, Escambia, and Mobile counties, which have the State's highest instances of teenage births and juvenile crimes, the story is no different.
Your generous contribution can help the Foundation work with nonprofit organizations to build coalitions to address problems affecting young men ages 8 to 18.

| Help Us Find A Cure For Lung Cancer | | Austin Lacey Charitable Fund
More people die each year from lung cancer than from any other type of cancer. But Austin Lacey's family knows you don't have to be a smoker to get lung cancer. Austin lost his battle with lung cancer in the prime of his life, at the age of 28. Cancer is the number-one cause of disease-related deaths in young people age 20 to 39. To make more people aware of just how serious a problem this is, Austin worked with his wife and family to establish The Austin Lacey Charitable Fund at The Community Foundation of South Alabama. "In honor of Austin, we want to help other young people who may not realize they are at risk," said Mrs. Cindy Lacey, Austin's mom. "Our mission is two fold. We want to make sure people know that young adults get cancer too...know the warning signs, get regular check ups, and act early. Secondly, we want people to know that lung cancer is THE NUMBER ONE cancer killer. The statistics are staggering and it can happen to anyone. We knew so little about lung cancer when Austin was diagnosed. We are seeking to illuminate the facts and hope as people learn about lung cancer funding will increase."
The Austin Lacey Fund is dedicated to raising awareness, facilitating early diagnosis, and providing support for young adults with cancer. For more information, visit the website AustinLaceyFund.com. |

| Your Gifts To The Community Endowment Fund Make Dramatic Differences In Lives | | |
Community Endowment Fund
Early this year, the Foundation awarded a grant to the Alabama Outward Bound School to support programs that provide services to the at-risk youth population in Baldwin County. This grant was made possible through your gifts to the Community Endowment Fund.
The primary goal of the initiative is to reduce the dropout rate in Baldwin County by coordinating the efforts of organizations that serve young males from 8 to 18 years of age.
Fifteen-year-old Eric participated on a 30-day Outward Bound course because his relationship with his parents had become strained and over whelming. He was angry and withdrawn and was expelled from school. His parents feared he would end up in jail. After Eric's Outward Bound experience, his father wrote a thank you letter,... "The positive change in my child is difficult to express. He left my home a very troubled child with no goals and a mountain of anger. He returned a young man that wants to be a Forester...the change has been dramatic". Eric life's has not been the same since that day. Today, Eric has graduated from High School and just completed three months with AmeriCorps. |
| Deduction For Charitable Donations | | |
Charitable Fund
As Congress debates tax increases, there may be changes to the current deduction for charitable contributions.
Take advantage of this year's charitable tax benefits by establishing a charitable fund at the Foundation.
When you create a Donor Advised Fund you can make a tax deductible charitable contribution before the end of the year and decide in the future which charitable organizations you wish to support.
Contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible in the year they are made. A wide range of assets can be used to establish a fund such as cash, publicly traded securities, bonds, mutual fund shares, private securities, real property, tangible personal property, and life insurance policies.
