Meditation on Slacking Off

I was thinking about how I have been slacking off in my spiritual disciplines. I tithe, but it comes out of my bank account. I'm not even conscious of it anymore. When I had less money, I was much more connected to the idea. Bible study? Oh boy, it's been awhile. I have been pondering the fact that I don't use two of my main spiritual gifts, as I should - music and artistic gifts. Practicing instruments, finishing compositions, planning and finishing visual artistic creations, losing a volume of poetry that should have been published several years ago - these are all lapses that are becoming chronic. Yes, I say prayers, but all too often they are the "quick, on-the-fly" type prayers - Lord's prayer verbatim, thanks for this, that, and the other, please help this one and that one.

Guiltily, I pulled out my prayer book tonight. I decided to say Compline. Things were going well until I got to the Song of Simeon. There was a book worm crawling across the page. No, it hasn't been that long since I opened that book, but that little critter seemed like it had a message for me. (Sadly, I killed the messenger, although I do not blame him.) I thank God tha I have been awakened to my laziness and I hope that tomorrow I will not lapse back into semi-consciousness. With God's help, I will become stronger in the Spirit day by day. Amen.

Usher Meeting/Training on Nov 2nd

Calling all new and experienced ushers, we'll gather for refresher training and getting to know each other on November 2nd following the 10am service. Please let Luke know you are interested in becoming an usher, and if you will be able to attend this brief meeting  luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org

Burgeoning Nursery!

On Saturday, Nov 1st, Deb Cardone and any volunteers available will move our current nursery room to the former "Music Room" at the far end of the undercroft (the North Main Street side). We are wonderfully "bursting at the seams" most Sundays with 6 to 8 babies and toddlers.  This increase in children means that we need more hands to help tend to them. We have one paid Nursery Care Provider, but we need a volunteer each Sunday to assist both during the 9am Formation Hour and during the 10am worship service. If you are able to assist, contact the Rector.

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!
Adult Forum

"In Search of Health & Wholeness" - VOCATION - Part I

With the start of a new month, Sunday, November 2 - the Adult Forum moves into the second component of our year-long theme "In Search of Wholeness and Health" with an overview and introduction to "Vocation"...a word we may use a lot but not necessarily truly understand. For the next four Sundays we will be discussing Vocation - what is it?  What does it mean and how in the world does it relate to me?  How does it relate to St. Luke's?  We will also hear from some of our parishioners regarding their vocations.  These are the questions into which we hope to delve. Join us at the Forum at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft.

Next Sunday, November 9 - Peter Dawson will join the Forum to talk with us about his vocation and why it is so important to him.

SLY, Jr - Sunday, Nov 2nd

SLY Jr. -- for upper elementary: 3rd to 6th graders - meets this Sunday for an All Saints' Sunday Stained Glass Scavenger Hunt! SLY, Jr. meets the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month after the 10 am service from 12 noon to 1pm and includes lunch.

Annual Shoppers' Luncheon & Bake Sale

 Friday, Nov 14th -- 11 am - 1 pm

One of the great traditions of St. Luke's and for downtown Jamestown is the annual Shoppers' Luncheon. The event includes the sale of baked goods, RADA cutlery and brooms; but what brings people back year after year is the delicious homemade Chicken-a-la-King dinner and homemade pie!  How can you help? There is set-up and clean-up; there is chicken and vegetable preparation, and of course, baking for the Bake Sale! Any help you can offer is welcome, speak to Wilma Twinam or give her a call ... 640-3646. Tickets are $7 for adults; $3 for children under 12; Take-out luncheons are also available; must be ordered and paid for by Thurs., Nov 13th; contact the church office to order - 483-6405.

Coming to Communion

Coming to Communion is an enrichment program for young people. At St. Luke's, communion is open to all and this course provides a context to understand what the Holy Eucharist means. This two-class course is designed for those young people who are currently receiving communion, but want to know more or for those who are preparing to receive communion for the first time.

The class is offered on November 12th and 19th

at 4 pm in the church undercroft.

Please RSVP to
