Stewardship:  Good Job!

The word "stewardship" can feel so disempowering as it reminds us that the very things in our possession are never solely or ultimately ours. But I would argue the opposite. Stewardship is a practice that allows us to better appreciate the many gifts in our lives. When you find that you can still live a comfortable life even after making a proportional gift to support God's mission emanating from St. Luke's Church, then you find true freedom. Ownership comes with problems (like cutting the grass on your lawn, etc), but stewardship comes with opportunities-both to grow personally and to watch the world change. We learn to see abundance instead of scarcity.

Let me offer a story of encouragement. I was presiding at an 8:00 a.m. service about a year ago and as I was busily setting the table for Communion, the ushers were walking around to receive the offering. When they got to the back of the Church, they reached Jerry, a dedicated grandpa, who had brought his 2 year old granddaughter to church for one of the first times. As he placed his pledge envelop into the plate...she jumped up on to the pew and yelled: "Good job, Grandpa!"   There was a quiet chuckle, but she didn't stop there. Each time another person put something in the plate, she exclaimed "Good Job!"

We were all blessed that day to be there. Sometimes we need to congratulate ourselves even when we are in the midst of prayerfully deciding the level of our stewardship...so let me be the first person to say it: "Good job!"

Stewardship Message ~

Participation in giving to St. Luke's Annual Stewardship Campaign is as important as the amount given. Out of a possible 219 pledge units (this includes singles, couples, families with children in the home), St Luke's has 113 units making pledges in 2014, or 51.6% - just over half. Wouldn't it be something if we could increase the percentage to 100% or even 75%? Please prayerfully consider your participation this year.

"A Sanctuary amid a Civil War:  Update on Jonathan's House Orphanage in Central African Republic"

On Sunday, October 19, Denise Holder will be the Forum speaker to share with us about Jonathan's House for Orphans. Central African Republic - a small country in Central Africa - has been in the news with the civil war that is taking place there.  Please join us as Denise shares the accomplishments that have been made at the orphanage - and how it truly has been a sanctuary amid the strife.

Sunday, October 26, the delegates who attended the Diocesan Convention will join us to report back about the Convention

St. Luke's Summer Reading Camp

Join us for the next meeting on October 19th after the
10 a.m. service when we discuss the next steps in planning the summer program.  Renee Hartling, principal of Love School will join us as we continue to make plans for the July 2015 summer reading camp that will be run by parishioners at St. Luke's Church. There will be an opportunity for everyone to serve and be engaged as we get closer, and you are welcome to join the leadership team to help make those plans.

SLY, Jr. to meet Sunday Oct 19th

Hey SLY Jr. Kids!
It's time for another wonderful, wacky adventure this Sunday (October 19) from Noon(ish) to 1PM(ish).
Unfortunately, we had to cancel the skydiving, but there are plenty of other things to do.  We will start with lunch and then move on to some arts & crafts and games.
If you have any questions, contact Tom Rankin at stampguy19@hotmail.com

The Genesis of Family Values

The Genesis of Family Values

Our Tuesday night study of Genesis meets

7pm to 8:30pm in the Undercroft and continues on Oct 21st with the Jacob and Leah/Rachel cycle. Please read Genesis 25:19-35:22.

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!

Wednesday Group - October 22nd

The Wednesday Group's main focus is to reach out to all senior members of our church and community, especially those who can't get to church on a regular basis. It is a great opportunity to meet and greet old friends, make new friends and participate as a church family at the Holy Communion church service. After the service we enjoy a delicious lunch and a program follows. The Wednesday Group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month in the undercroft, which is wheelchair accessible. If you'd like to attend and are in need of transportation, please contact Liz McIntyre at 664-2873.

Blue Bag Ministry in October

For the month of October, we'll support the Anew Center. We do need your help to transport the collected items to the agencies each week. Transport volunteers only have to help few hours one day per month. Some lifting and stair climbing may be involved.  If you're interested, please send an email to Cáitlín O'Reilly at c.m.oreilly@me.com or call her at 716.413.9452.

New Comer's Lunch at the Rectory

Are you new to St. Luke's Church? On Sunday, October 26, I would like to invite newcomers to our

parish to join me and my family for lunch at the Rectory after the 10:00 service. We will share how each of us got to St. Luke's, talk about the Episcopal Church, how we pray, how we read scripture, and how we put our faith in action. I expect the conversation to be lively and the fellowship strong. Join me at the Rectory, 311 Crossman St., on October 26 at 12:00 noon.  Please contact the office 716-483-6405 or email to sign up & let us know if you need childcare

4th Street Cafe

Are you a Martha or a Mary? (Do you like to "do" or like to "sit with and listen"?) Or you might even be both! Do you have some free time on Thursday mornings once a month? The 4th Street Café is looking for people like you! This ministry has taken off and we are encouraging folks to learn more about it and to consider helping us out. There will be a training/informational session on Sunday, November 9 following the 10:00 service. Come and see - even if you are just curious. Any questions, contact Barbara Bumsted - 483-6405 or barbara.bumsted@stlukesjamestown.org

Upcoming Baptism Date

The next opportunity for baptism will occur on All Saints Sunday (November 2nd) at the 10:00 service. This is the rite of initiation into the Christian faith and full membership in the Church of God. All interested parties should contact the Rector by calling the church office 716-483-6405 or emailing luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org.

Usher Meeting/Training on Nov 2nd

Do you remember the first time you came to church and that nice usher who greeted you warmly and made you feel at home? Why not return the favor for someone else and serve as an usher? Calling all new and experienced ushers, we'll gather for refresher training on November 2nd following the 10am service. Please let Luke know you are interested. (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org)

THANK YOU!

I want to say Thank You to all who helped make our Blessing of the Bells such a successful and wonderful event; those who orchestrated the preparations, set-up, and clean up, and all the special food and beverage offerings! It was a very exceptional time! Blessings and thanksgivings to: Steven Cobb , Linda Dawson, Sharon Drennen, Andrew Hill, Paul Johnson, Andrew Schmidt, Lisa Yaggie, and to Kurt Carlson and his Planet Earth Catering, and Rosie Papalia for her the videography.

SHOPPERS' LUNCHEON - NOV 14th

In preparation for the Shoppers' Luncheon, the refrigerators need to have excess food items "disappear" and extraneous dishes that have been left behind for one reason or another, need to find their homes. Please help. If you happen to have any church items at your home, ie. dinner plates, extra flatware, wooden spoons or spatulas, it is appreciated if they could find their way back to the church cupboards. Thank you!

SHOPPERS' LUNCHEON - NOV 14th
