Celebration of New Ministry:
Whose Shoulders Are You Standing On?

As we approach October 18th with its Lukean Hat Trick-of a St. Luke's Day celebration of a new Rector named Luke at St. Luke's Episcopal Church-I'd like to invite you to ponder this question: Whose shoulders are you standing on? Take a second to consider those people who have made your life possible; those who have pushed you to higher heights; and those who have given you a firm place to stand. Where would you be without them? And on the flipside of the coin, whom are you currently supporting and launching to reach their full potential?

A Celebration of New Ministry is an invitation to consider all that has come before even as we set our sights on a new horizon. St. Luke's rests on the shoulders of many women and men of God-whose faithful prayers, courageous stewardship and capable leadership make our very existence possible. I am deeply grateful for the 13Rectors who have come before me and upon whose shoulders I now stand. But I am more grateful for the multitude of named and unnamed parishioners whose earthly pilgrimage brought them to this place. I am most grateful for those of you who currently call St. Luke's your spiritual home. It is your smiling faces that give me hope for the future.

We stand at a place of unique opportunity...we get to celebrate new beginnings and all that has come before. The "New" ministry that we are celebrating-is our new ministry and not merely the function of calling a new priest or shepherd of the flock. This call to new ministry just happens to occur in our Stewardship season-when we are collectively and individually considering how God might be calling us to translate our resources into mission. Stewardship is the opportunity to give thanks for all those people upon whose shoulders you stand and for those who have launched you, and to consider who might one day be standing upon the many gifts that you gave to those around you.

Stewardship Message ~

As John Calvin observed in the 16th century, "There cannot be a surer rule, nor a stronger exhortation to the observance of it, than when we are taught that all the endowments which we possess are divine deposits entrusted to us for the very purpose of being distributed for the good of our neighbour." Those endowments - our time, treasure and talent - gain in value as we share them with others having to do without.

Adult Forum

 "Meet the Rector!"

On this wonderful Sunday morning we will have our new rector, The Rev. Luke F. Fodor, (in case you weren't sure!), joining us in the Forum to talk about - Luke Fodor.  He will share his story of what brought him to St. Luke's and also what his immediate hopes and dreams are for our parish.  Please join us as we continue to get to know - and develop a relationship with Fr. Luke.

The following week, October 19, Denise Holder will be back with us to talk about the orphanage in Central African Republic.

Paul Bunyan Day - Saturday, Oct 11th

The annual sacred fraternal gathering in the woods known as Paul Bunyan Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 11th at Dan Anderson's farm (4463 Mahanna Rd; Bemus Point).
If you're new....the idea of the event is to have some manly bonding time structured around a communion service out in the woods while doing a good deed (proving firewood for the needy). Our annual lumber-jacking extravaganza! Contact Dan Anderson (imn24stree@windstream.net)
with questions and confirm your participation. Peter Dawson has volunteered his services as "The Kitchen," and plans to have breakfast available by 8:30 am; coffee, muffins, bagels, ham & eggs and OJ. Lunch will also be simple. NO, you don't need to contribute anything, just let Dan or Pete know you plan to attend! Thanks. petergdawson@hotmail.com

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!

The Genesis of Family Values

Our Tuesday night study of Genesis (7pm to 8:30pm on the Undercroft Stage area) continues as we pick up the Jacob and Leah/Rachel cycle. Please read Genesis 25:19-35:22.

Acolyte Training - Sunday, Oct 12th

Calling all Acolytes !! ... we'll gather for a training on Sunday, October 12th following the 10am service. We need to build our acolyte corps and invite all children of 4th grade or 10 years old and older, youth and adults to participate. Carry the cross in the processional, "float" the ribbons, carry the torches to light the way. If you've always wanted to serve in the chancel, now is your opportunity! We have three services that provide plenty of opportunity for participation. Think of the possibilities ... practice in a smaller environment such as the 5 pm worship service, then participate in the 10 am service. Please email Luke at luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org or Ted Kapuscinski 3557rt62@gmail.com

( 716-267-2745) if you are interested.

Blue Bag Ministry in October

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Blue Bag Ministry table at the Ministry Fair.  And thank you for your generous contributions last month!  We have no shortage of agencies and programs with which to partner.  Where we do have a shortage is for people to help transport the collected items to the agencies.  If we had at least six transport volunteers then you would only have to help out every three or four months for a few hours one day per month during regular business hours. Some lifting and stair climbing may be involved.  If you're interested, please send an email to Cáitlín O'Reilly at c.m.oreilly@me.com or call her at 716.413.9452.  Thank you!

Be sure to pick up a blue bag this Sunday! For the month of October, we'll support the Anew Center. The shopping lists and bags will be handed out on the second Sunday of the month and the collection is on the 3rd Sunday of the month! Contact Caitlin O'Reilly,

Rosie Papalia (rosierein@hotmail.com),

or Hope Hill (hillh2011@gmail.com).

St Luke's Summer Reading Camp

We continue to make plans for the July 2015 summer reading camp that will be run by parishioners at St. Luke's Church. There will be an opportunity for everyone to serve and be engaged as we get closer, but you're welcome to join the leadership team to help make plans. Join us for the next meeting on October 19th after the 10 a.m. service when we discuss the next steps in planning the summer program. Renee Hartling, principal of Love School will join us.

Upcoming Baptism Date

The next opportunity for baptism will occur on All Saints Sunday (November 2nd) at the 10:00 service. This is the rite of initiation into the Christian faith and full membership in the Church of God. All interested parties should contact the Rector (716-483-6405 or luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org).  A Baptism class will be held on Saturday, Nov 1st at 10 am.

Usher Meeting/Training on Nov 2nd

Do you remember the first time you came to church and that nice usher who greeted you warmly and made you feel at home? Why not return the favor for someone else and serve as an usher? Calling all new and experienced ushers, we'll gather for refresher training on November 2nd following the 10am service. Please let Luke know you are interested. (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org)
