What do you mean Stewardship?

You know what a steward is by analogy: he is the person who manages the wine for the owner of the restaurant. He tends the bottles, chills some, turns others. He receives new supply, takes care of the empties, and keeps the place looking clean and bright. He cares a whole lot about the wine, and wants to make sure that people have access to it and enjoy it, but none of it is really his. It's the person who owns the restaurant, whom you only know by your experience there, who really owns the wine.

Or...she is the person who represents the airline to you when you fly. She takes you to your seat, offers you something to eat or drink, and directs you to safety in the event of an emergency. She manages your experience as you travel. But she doesn't own the airline; she represents it. She offers it to you for the owner, whom you probably haven't met directly.

A steward is one who manages another's property or finances or affairs. In the stories Jesus likes to tell, it is the person left in charge of a large estate or vineyard. It's a person who serves others on behalf of someone else, and that's why we talk about stewardship in the church. The world is the vineyard, and Jesus calls us to serve each other for God. Please prayerfully consider what it means for you to be a steward at St. Luke's Church.

Stewardship Message

Stewardship as seen by Peyton Conway March, a WW I US Army General"There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else."

The Genesis of Family Values

In preparation for the first class on October 7th, please read Abraham Cycle located in Genesis from 11:27 to 21:34.

This four-week course will re-introduce us to our earliest ancestors of faith-as found in the book of Genesis. Using the concept of family values-we'll reread the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel/Leah, and Joseph-and track both the development of this very human family system and their collective encounter with the living God. We'll be invited to ponder our own family stories as we search for the living God. Join the Rector on Tuesday nights in October at 7pm to 8:30pm for this lively series.

Blessing of the Pets

The St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals

Join us and SLY, Jr. on Sunday, October 5th at

5 pm for the annual St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals. We'll have a simple communion service for the humans, treats for the animals and blessings for both. Contact Luke Fodor with questions. (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org)

Adult Forum

"The Faith of Robert H. Jackson"

On Sunday, October 5, the Adult Forum will step back from the year-long theme of "In Search of Wholeness and Health", and will turn to looking at one of the area's favorite sons, Robert H. Jackson.  Earlier this year we did discuss Jackson and his funeral which was held here at St. Luke's 60 years ago this month. Now we will take a bit of a look at his faith and what it meant to him. Greg Peterson will be back with us to share a video and some insight regarding this famous figure. Join us at 9 am on the stage area of the Undercroft.

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!
CHURCH SCHOOL

We hope you will help our new church school curriculum, Spark to catch fire!  In just under an hour each Sunday, through creative stories and crafts workshops, our children will light up by sharing God's illuminating love, and we hope you will join them. Ideally a teaching team consists of two teachers per class in rotation (4 week session).  Volunteers need not be only parents, any member of our congregation is welcome to join a team and participate. Please help us by building a team and volunteering for a session with your friends from the congregation. Contact Debbie (lovesblue1@yahoo.com) with questions.

Lector & Lay Eucharist Ministers - Oct 5

Now you've been to the Ministry Fair, have you considered becoming a Sunday morning reader, or chalice bearer?  Calling all Lectors and Lay Eucharist Ministers ... we'll gather for a refresher training on October 5th following the 10am service. If you've always wanted to serve up in the chancel, now is your opportunity! Please let Luke know you are interested. (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org

Paul Bunyan Day - Oct 11th

The annual sacred fraternal gathering in the woods known as Paul Bunyan Day is scheduled Saturday, October 11th at Dan Anderson's farm (4463 Mahanna Rd; Bemus Point). If you're new....the idea of the event is to have some manly bonding time structured around a communion service out in the woods while doing a good deed (proving firewood for the needy). Our annual lumber-jacking extravaganza! Contact Dan Anderson (imn24stree@windstream.net) with questions and confirm your participation.

Peter Dawson has volunteered his services as "The Kitchen," and hopes to have breakfast going by 8:30; something simple like coffee, muffins, bagels, ham & eggs and OJ. (Hopefully, Dan will let Pete use his grill). Lunch will be simple too. Trust me. "NO", you don't need to contribute something, just let Dan or Pete know you plan to attend! Thanks. petergdawson@hotmail.com

Acolyte Training - Oct 12

Historically, the Acolyte ministry has been viewed as one for the church's young people, but during recent years many adults have also participated. St Luke's is looking to build our acolyte corps. We invite children of 4th grade or 10 years old, youth and adults to participate; Carry the Cross, "float" the ribbons, process the torches to light the way ... join us.

St. Luke's currently has three services that provide opportunity for plenty of participation. Think of the possibilities ... practice in a smaller environment such as the 5 pm worship service, then participate in the 10 am service. Please email Luke at luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org or speak to Ted K.

Thank you, from Kim & Doug Mann

There aren't enough adjectives to describe how wonderful, helpful, caring, loving, supportive and generous my beloved friends and church family are. Thank you so very, very much for the many ways you provided for, served at, and donated to the Fight Breast Cancer Benefit for me. Thoughtful people make thankful hearts, and I am ever so grateful for all of you! It is your prayers and your love that have kept me strong and healthy through all this. May you know the fullness of God's grace and Glory as I have. ~kim
