Family Values and Breaking the Cycle

"Visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation." Exodus 34:7

We all carry baggage. Often the baggage that we carry is a family heirloom...like an old chest carried from the old world via Ellis Island. Enclosed in this baggage is our family "iniquity"-all of learned misbehaviors passed down from generation to generation. You know the laundry list: alcoholism, workaholic-ism, emotional vacuity, etc.   All of this baggage is someone else's fault and problem until you have children. Once children enter the equation, each of us becomes a conduit to pass on some the best and worst of our family baggage-whether we want to or not.

It was precisely this fear that encouraged me to wait to have children. Emerging from an extremely loving and caring family I did not, however, escape unscathed. Although I know that my own dad loves me fiercely...I could somehow never find the affirmation I desperately craved. I worried that I too would pass this on to my son. So it was a joy when my son told me one day a couple of summers ago that he would grow up and learn to become a man from me just like I learned from my dad. Although I had felt his sentiment was initially false, I sat there and began to weep. It was true...obviously my dad had taught me what I needed to know-totally unbeknownst to him or me.

Breaking the cycle is not an easy prospect. We are too often unaware of our own baggage, but sometimes if we listen to our children the cycle begins to break. Each time we are able to persevere and break the cycle...God's redemption is felt in a new way. Grace and peace flow backward from the present moment working upon history and opening a space for a new future.

Join me on Tuesday nights throughout the month of October at "The Genesis of Family Values" when we explore our individual and collective baggage by peering into the family system of our spiritual forefathers and foremothers.

Blessing of the Bells

After a year of silence and months of work, the tower turrets have all been repaired, the electrical system is fixed, and new illuminated clock faces are installed. So...its time to celebrate! Join us for a festive evensong with special music by the St. Luke's Choir, Serendipity and a blessing of the bells. A reception will follow. Join us on September 28th at 4:00 p.m. for this special community event.
CHURCH SCHOOL

We hope you will help our new church school curriculum, Spark to catch fire!  In just under an hour each Sunday, through creative stories and crafts workshops, our children will light up by sharing God's illuminating love, and we hope you will join them. Ideally a teaching team consists of two teachers per class in rotation (4 week session). This enables the maximum flexibility to accommodate busy schedules while maintaining consistency in the classroom. Volunteers need not be only parents, any member of our congregation is welcome to join a team and participate. Please help us by building a team and volunteering for a session with your friends from the congregation. Contact Debbie (lovesblue1@yahoo.com) with questions.

Bricks of Faith:

SLY (St Luke's Youth)

Starting on September 28th, Youth Group returns to its normally scheduled time 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the 3rd floor of the Parish Hall.

Adult Forum

Sunday, September 28, the Adult Forum will focus on Stewardship.  What does that word mean?  Fr. Jerre Feagan and Eric Baron from the diocesan Congregational Support Team will speak with us about the importance of stewardship.  Remember, there is more to stewardship than just giving money.  Stewardship involves how we live our lives - and when giving, how we do that.  Come join us as we learn more and discuss this subject!

The Genesis of Family Values

Most of us can probably attest to the surprise of that one startling moment when we find ourselves becoming one of our parents. Maybe it's an odd facial expression, a peculiar turn of phrase or simply the way that we have come to view the world-in any case, the fact is that we have come to embody our family members. None of this should it be surprising since we have silently been watching and studying them since our very beginning-our very genesis.

This four-week course will re-introduce us to our earliest ancestors of faith-as found in the book of Genesis. Using the concept of family values-we'll reread the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel/Leah, and Joseph-and track both the development of this very human family system and their collective encounter with the living God. We'll be invited to ponder our own family stories as we search for the living God. Join the Rector on Tuesday nights in October at 7pm to 8:30pm for a lively series.

In preparation for the first class on October 7th, please read Abraham Cycle located in Genesis from 11:27 to 21:34.

St Luke's Ministry Fair

St. Luke's is a learning community where we let our passions and interests lead us into new learnings and areas of growth. To help you investigate how you might called to use your time and talents this year, we are offering a ministry fair to help you discover some new area to grow in this year.

Join us during coffee hour after the 10 a.m, service on September 28th and begin a new year of learning through service.
