A Whole Lot of Blessings!

If you've been paying attention to the St. Luke's calendar, you'll have notice numerous blessings scheduled this fall: we've blessed backpacks, we've blessed our teens as the commit to another year of growth, we'll soon bless our newly refurbished belltower on September 28th, our pets on October 5th and our annual commitment to the parish on Joyful Sunday on November 16th. Have you ever wondered what invoking God's blessing means? Whenever someone sneezes in our presence, we often offer, "God bless you!"

Simply defined, a blessing is "a thing conducive to happiness or welfare." But what's happening when we bless something? Most of us no longer imagine that something magical is transpiring. A precocious 1st grader recently said to me, "It's silly to say "God bless you" when someone sneezes, it's not like we still think that evil spirits are causing sickness." He's partially right of course, but we do still compelled to say, "bless you" when someone sneezes. Why?

We invoke God's blessings on things and each other, not because we are magically cramming new blessing into an object or even a body, but as a reminder. Everything is already blessed because it was God who created it and called it good. When we bless something, we're just reminding ourselves of the goodness and happiness that is present in our midst-even when we have allergies or a head cold.

I hope you'll continue to join us at these special blessing services that we offer at St. Luke's, but I also pray that you'll discover the many blessings in your life that surround you daily. One of my favorite morning rituals is to bless my children before they head off to school. I make the sign of the cross on their heads, saying, "Remember you have been blessed, now be a blessing for others." You too have been blessed, now be a blessing for those you encounter this week.

SLY (aka St Luke's Youth)

SLY --  The (SLY) Youth Group is traveling to Peak n Peek Sunday, Sept 21st, to take on the Challenge Ropes course.  We'll be leaving St. Luke's at 2:45pm so we can begin climbing once we get there.  We'd love for our teens, and their friends are welcome too, to join us.   We need to make reservations, so if you'd let us know you're coming that would helpful.  Please let me know if you have questions. The subsidized cost of the event $25 (the normal price is $37) and there are some additional scholarships available.

SLY Jr. --  Where can you see an eagle in Chautauqua County?  Where can you try an outdoor obstacle course designed just for kids?  Where can you go on a nature walk in between Jamestown and Frewsburg?   On Sunday, September 21,

SLY Jr. will be doing all these things at the Jamestown Audubon Society!  We'll leave from the church and meet our Audubon tour guide at 1:00 PM.  There will be an optional lunch at church for SLY Jr. kids before we head out to the wilderness.  Any questions, contact Tom Rankin (stampguy19@hotmail.com or 397-9193).

Adult Forum

On Sunday, September 21 at 9:00 am the Forum continues its series on wholeness with Randy Ordines and Jason Stronz of Courier Capital Corporation, who are also the financial advisors for St. Luke's.

Sunday, September 28, the Adult Forum will focus on Stewardship.  What does that word mean?  Fr. Jerre Feagan and Eric Baron from the diocesan Congregational Support Team will speak with us about the importance of stewardship.  Remember, there is more to stewardship than just giving money.  Stewardship involves how we live our lives - and when giving, how we do that.  Come join us as we learn more and discuss this subject!

St Luke's Reading Camp

If you're reading this-someone helped you learn to read. Can you think of the person who most helped you learn to read? I have many fond thoughts of the people who helped me when I was young and a struggling reader. I try and repay the favor for others whenever I can. Will you join me and be one of those people that someone remembers 10, 30, 50 years from now?   The people of St. Luke's hope to help address the critical needs of the Jamestown community by creating a reading camp next summer. Join us for a preliminary meeting after the 10 a.m. service this Sunday, Sept 21st
Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!

St Luke's WEDNESDAY GROUP - Sept 24

The Wednesday Group will resume this week on September 24th!

This month Suzuki violin players, with Nina Karbaka, will present a musical program for our Wednesday Group. The Wednesday Group is a time for senior members of our parish to gather together for worship, lunch and a program in the undercroft at St. Luke's. Coffee is available at 11am, a communion service is held at 11:30am, followed by lunch and our program. Transportation to and from the Wednesday Group is also available for those who need a ride. For more information, call the church office, 483-6405, or Elizabeth McIntyre, 664-2873.

St Luke's Ministry Fair

St. Luke's is a learning community where we let our passions and interests lead us into new learnings and areas of growth. To help you investigate how you might called to use your time and talents this year, we are offering a ministry fair to help you discover some new area to grow in this year.

Join us during coffee hour after the 10 a.m, service on September 28th and begin a new year of learning through service.

Blue Bag Ministry

We learn and are formed through our service to others.
We are starting a new ministry at St. Luke's that will allow parishioners of all ages to learn by caring for others, and our children will lead us.
On the 2nd Sunday of each month, the children and youth of St. Luke's will be on hand after the 10 am service to distribute Blue Shopping Bags with a shopping list enclosed to each parishioner.
On the 3rd Sunday of the month, parishioners will bring the bags back filled and leave them in the Narthex and children will carry them up at the offertory.
Each month we'll support another community organization. For the month of September we are collecting items for the food pantry at 1st Covenant Church's "God's Pantry."
Contact Rosie Papalia (rosierein@hotmail.com), Cáitlín O'Reilly (c.m.oreilly@me.com) or
Hope Hill (hillh2011@gmail.com) for more information and suggestions of organizations to support
Blessing of the Bells

After a year of silence and months of work, the tower turrets have all been repaired, the electrical system is fixed, and new illuminated clock faces are installed. So...its time to celebrate! Join us for a festive evensong with special music by the St. Luke's Choir, Serendipity and a blessing of the bells. A reception will follow. Join us on September 28th at 4:00 p.m. for this special community event.

The Genesis of Family Values

This four-week course will re-introduce us to our earliest ancestors of faith-as found in the book of Genesis. Using the concept of family values-we'll reread the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel/Leah, and Joseph-and track both the development of this very human family system and their collective encounter with the living God. We'll be invited to ponder our own family stories as we search for the living God.

Join the Rector on Tuesday nights in October at 7pm to 8:30pm for a lively series, beginning October 7th
