Learning Community, Learning Communities

When I was little and some teacher or other authority figure would share some new piece of information with me, my response was usually, "I know, I know." Although my parents and others would tease me about this, the silliness of this response and its deeper concomitant, psychological underpinnings never pierced my consciousness (or was it that my lack of consciousness). Sadly, it wasn't until I turned 20 that I finally stopped.

But God does have a sense of humor. Now that my son responds to me in similar fashion-"I know, dad!", I have gained new insight into learning and to why one might respond in this fashion. So here it is: learning is hard work and the process of learning starts with state of not knowing. We inherently sense that this creates a power differential and we have to reject it. Why else would men not stop (that is before GPS came along) to ask for directions?

The truth is that to learn we have to submit ourselves not only the subject at hand, but also to the one teaching us. This is difficult for many of us to embrace. Why? Because we have to admit that we are ignorant about certain subjects and that others might know more...and just might have "power" over us. Embracing this vulnerability is difficult, but there's no real other way to learn. The very etymology of the word, "education," which means to lead out...as in lead out of ignorance", bears this point out.

Now, as all teachers and parents know...teachers are learners too. They are completely vulnerable. Teachers are those who are doing the most learning-and it is the students who often teach. This of course means, that power is always shared between the student and the teacher in the learning community. The most successful learning communities foster trust and mutual responsibility between teacher and student. They are places where we learn to be community.

Church is one such place. We are all here to learn together...to make help make each other into better people-into the loving community that Jesus promised we'd be. This is hard and sometimes scary work, as we need to submit to each other and mutually share power, but anything less will not do. Come join us. Come learn and come teach. Your presence will enhance our learning community-as we learn to truly be the "beloved community."

"There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the things we crave most in life -- happiness, freedom, and peace of mind -- are always attained by giving them to someone else."

SLY (aka St Luke's Youth)
Kick-Off Events

SLY Kick Off Events

As the year begins, St. Luke's Youth has two exciting kick off events planned.  On Sunday the 14th, SLY starts the year with a BBQ and fun yard games at Deacon Cathy Smith's residence 5901 Stow Rd in Ashville, NY 14710, at 4pm.

Then on Sunday the 21st, the youth will meet at St. Luke's at 2:45 p.m. to travel to Peek 'n Peak to get to know one another and to challenge themselves on the Ropes Course (the subsidized cost of the event $25 and there are some additional scholarships available).   Please contact the Rev. Luke Fodor (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org) to indicate your participation in one or both events.

SLY Jr.

The first SLY Jr. meeting of the year is happening on September 21 at 12:00 pm with a special Creation-themed visit to the Jamestown Audubon Center.

Where can you see an eagle in Chautauqua County?  Where can you try an outdoor obstacle course designed just for kids?  Where can you go on a nature walk in between Jamestown and Frewsburg?   On Sunday, September 21,

SLY Jr. will be doing all these things at the Jamestown Audubon Society!  We plan to carpool out to the J.A.S. and meet our Audubon tour guide at 1:00 PM.  We will serve an optional lunch at church for SLY Jr. kids before we head out to the wilderness.  Any questions, contact Tom Rankin (stampguy19@hotmail.com or 397-9193).

Adult Forum

The Adult Forum will have its official start Sunday, Sept 14 at

9 am on the stage area of the undercroft, with Sam Armstrong as our guest speaker who will tell us about his experience with a program entitled "Financial Peace University".

On Sunday, September 21 at 9:00 am the Forum will continue its series on working toward wholeness and being "healthy". On this particular Sunday, Randy Ordines and Jason Stronz, of Courier Capital Corporation - who are also financial advisors for St. Luke's, will be on hand to discuss three stages of our financial lives. There will be information for ALL of us and it's never too soon - nor never too late! - to start planning. And what does it mean to "plan?" If you have started - they may have some pointers helping you make sure you are on the right track. See you at the Forum on Sunday!

St Luke's Reading Camp

Did you realize there are 15 to 20 professionally trained educators at St. Luke's Church? Aside from the number of teachers that attend our parish, St. Luke's is rife with educational opportunities and classes for all ages. There is no doubt that as a congregation, we value education. And yet we find ourselves in a community were significant portions' of the population are underserved with educational offerings. So here is some math for you:

             (Value x Resources) + Need = ???

Join us as we try and solve this problem together by addressing the critical needs of the Jamestown community. We'll meet after the 10:00 a.m. service on September 21st on the Undercroft Stage to discuss the possibility of the holding a St. Luke's Reading Camp. You need not be an educator to join the conversation everyone is invited to join us. Contact Luke Fodor

(luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org)

with questions or comments.

Children's Choir

The Youth/Children's Choir is open to children from kindergarten to sixth grade. We'll begin this Sunday, Sept 14th at 11:15, or following the 10 am service.
Meet with Mr. Andrew Schmidt in the Chapel.

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Tuesdays 4 - 5:30 pm at St. Luke's Church in the undercroft!
Blue Bag Ministry

We learn and are formed through our service to others. We are starting a new ministry at St. Luke's that will allow parishioners of all ages to learn by caring for others, and our children will lead us. On the 2nd Sunday of each month, the children and youth of St. Luke's will be on hand after the 10 am service to distribute Blue Shopping Bags with a shopping list enclosed to each parishioner. On the 3rd Sunday of the month, parishioners will bring the bags back filled and leave them in the Narthex and children will carry them up at the offertory. Each month we'll support another community organization. For the month of September we are collecting items for the food pantry at 1st Covenant Church's "God's Pantry."
Contact Rosie Papalia (rosierein@hotmail.com), Cáitlín O'Reilly (c.m.oreilly@me.com) or
Hope Hill (hillh2011@gmail.com) for more information and suggestions of organizations to support.

The Genesis of Family Values

Most of us can probably attest to the surprise of that one startling moment when we find ourselves becoming one of our parents. Maybe it's an odd facial expression, a peculiar turn of phrase or simply the way that we have come to view the world-in any case, the fact is that we have come to embody our family members. None of this should it be surprising since we have silently been watching and studying them since our very beginning-our very genesis.

This four-week course will re-introduce us to our earliest ancestors of faith-as found in the book of Genesis. Using the concept of family values-we'll reread the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel/Leah, and Joseph-and track both the development of this very human family system and their collective encounter with the living God. We'll be invited to ponder our own family stories as we search for the living God.

Join the Rector on Tuesday nights in October at 7pm to 8:30pm for a lively series.
