Welcome Back Sunday - September 7, 2014
Restful Labors

Restful Labors

As Labor Day comes and goes, the world transforms from restful to stressful. The quality of an hour decreases as the demands on it increase. Teachers and employers expect more us now that summer is gone. At St. Luke's the passing of Labor Day does signal the start of a new programmatic season with more educational offerings, more opportunities for spiritual growth and more occasions to serve. Although there will be more activities to attend and much work to be done, this year we will strive to keep the quality of the hour shining with the brightness and restfulness of a long summer day-as we remember the rest and refreshment that God found in creating-"And it was good!"

The goodness starts with a special Welcome Back Sunday Church School Assembly for children (Nursery through 6th grade) and their parents/grandparents on September 7th. We'll begin at 8:45am with a free hot breakfast (bacon, eggs, etc.) and registration, followed by a special lesson, a creative activity and information about of the many activities and services for young people at St. Luke's. Following this assembly, the children will be invited to bring their backpacks forward to the chancel steps for a special blessing to start this academic year at the start of the 10:00am service.

CHURCH SCHOOL

Church School Teachers Training

For our new curriculum, called Spark, to catch fire we need YOU to volunteer to teach church school! In just under an hour each Sunday, through creative stories and crafts workshops, you'll actively work to light up a young person by sharing God's illuminating love with them.

This can be a fun and enriching experience that you can share with your children. Ideally a teaching team would be made up of two teachers per class in rotation (4 week session). This would enable the maximum flexibility to all parents and accommodate busy schedules while maintaining consistency in the classroom. The volunteers need not be only parents, any member of our congregation welcome to join a team and participate. Please help us by building a team and volunteering for a session with your friends from the congregation.

The Rector and Debbie Cardone will lead a special training for Church School teachers on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 am. Contact Debbie (lovesblue1@yahoo.com) with questions, to register your child for the 2014-15 Church School academic year OR to volunteer to teach.

Children's Chapel - 10 am Sundays

Children's Chapel

Starting this fall, our youngest children (roughly pre-K to 4th grade) begin at 10am in the Chapel, with music, prayers, and a story from the Spark Story Bible. Children's Chapel will follow the same order of service as in the "big church," all geared to be especially meaningful to young children. During the Exchange of Peace, children join their families for communion. Parents are welcome to join their children during Children's Chapel, but not required. Please use your judgment to determine if it is necessary to stay.

Children-fidgety or not - are always welcome to worship with their parents at any of the regularly scheduled services, but Children's Chapel will provide an opportunity for their own service - and they might just allow their parents to worship with them!

Children's Choir

The Children's Choir is open to children from kindergarten to sixth grade. They rehearse on Sundays during the school year from 11:30-12:00 p.m., and sing in church monthly.
In addition to preparing for the Sunday service, there is training in music reading and voice development. Rehearsals start on September 14th at 11:30 in the Chapel with the first performance at the 10:00am service on Oct 12th.

An Aco-WHAT?!?

An Acolyte is someone who assists the clergy at our worship services. This assistance is revealed by lighting the candles, carrying the crosses and torches, preparing the wine and water for communion, and most importantly...setting an example for the congregation. Historically, the Acolyte ministry has been viewed as a ministry for the youthful, but during recent years adults have also participated. We are looking for new acolytes at the start of this new academic year and we invite children (4th grade or 10 years old), youth and adults to join us.

St. Luke's currently has three services that provides for plenty of participation.

Going forward, as we rebuild the Acolyte ministry ALL interested children, youth and adults contact Ted Kapuscinski (3557rt62@gmail.com or 716-267-2745) to express their interest. We will offer several special trainings this fall.

Bricks of Faith:
The Sacred Story told with Legos!

Our faith is something that develops as we grow, incrementally-a block at a time. To assist the faith formation of our children and children from the community, we are creating an afterschool Lego club where children (K to 5th grade) are invited to play, listen to bible stories retold with Legos and have a snack. We start on Tuesday, September 9th and will meet every Tuesday from 4-5:30pm. Young and old are invited to come join the fun as we need volunteers to help. Contact Luke Fodor (luke.fodor@stlukesjamestown.org)
with questions, to volunteer and to express interest in the class.

Kick-Off Sunday - September 14th

With Kick Off Sunday, Church is back in the full swing of another programmatic year. The choir is back. Our 9:00 a.m. Formation Hour returns with the Adult Forum, the J2A youth classes and the first rotation of Church School.

New this year is the hot breakfast served from 8:45 to 9:05 a.m. to connect parishioners from the 8am & the 10am services, to fuel our bodies and minds for the formation hour, and to make it easier for your family to get to church on a Sunday morning. There will be a nominal charge for this breakfast simply to cover the costs of its preparation.

We'll have a hot dog roast on the 14th following the 10 am service to celebrate the kick off to the year. SLY (St. Luke's Youth Group) also starts their year on this Sunday with a BBQ at 4pm at Deacon Cathy's house.

The Church:
A Safe Place for Children & Adults

SAFE CHURCH TRAINING will be held at the Diocesan Ministry Center in Tonawanda, NY, on Saturday, September 13th, and on Saturday, October 4th here at St Luke's in Jamestown; both programs start at 9 am.

Safe Church Training protects not only volunteers and employees, but also those under their charge. At the heart of the Safe Church program are two courses: The Church: A Safe Place for Children and The Church: A Safe Place for Adults. Volunteers who work with youth, (church school teachers, Youth volunteers) are required to take the Safe Place for Children course. There is no fee for Safe Church Training. If you have not had the Safe Church training, please be sure to inquire and plan to attend one of these offerings.

Individuals seeking canonical licensing for Eucharistic Minister, Eucharistic Visitor, and persons in the process toward ordination, all clergy and all employees of the diocese and its congregations are required to take both courses.
