An Open Heart

Closed-mindedness is the capacity to be closed to every mind but my own.  Which is a very small reservoir of knowledge, indeed.

It is not that information is not available.  It is simply that we fail to see  it out, to listen to opposing viewpoints, to imagine another way.  There is almost nothing on earth that can be done only one way - except, perhaps the addition of 2 + 2 (and even that shifts!).  But we love to act as if there were.

The need to be right too often supersedes the need to be open to the ideas of those around us.  It is the disease of power and self-righteousness that is the terminal disease of human relationships.

When we refuse to say "your wrong" or "I'm right" to anything - when we learn to say instead: "I have always thought" and "Tell me why you say that" - we give ourselves the opportunity to learn something.

We grow up learning what we call the truths of our culture.  When we begin to learn the truths of other cultures, we discover that truth is the sum total of everything, not the institutionalized doctrines of any one part of it.

Stretching ourselves beyond the boundaries of our family, our race, our nation, and our religion brings us to the point where we become citizens of the world.  Just exactly what we were meant to be to begin with.

Musicians Gathering - March 29

A Diocesan Musicians Gathering

An informal gathering of church musicians is planned for Saturday, March 29 beginning at 9:30am at St. Paul's Church in Springville at 591 E. Main Street.   This will be a time to share thoughts and ideas about the state of music in our diocese. Bishop Franklin will be a guest and a speaker at this event.  We will conclude the meeting by sharing a meal. If you are able to do so, please bring $5 as a contribution for the food. If you have any questions or driving concerns, please contact Jonathan Scarozza at 716-572-8306.  We hope to gather as many church musicians as possible.

Mothering Sunday - March 30th

Mothering Sunday - Sunday, March 30th

Mothering Sunday is a Christian holiday celebrated throughout Europe that falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent. Secularly, it became an occasion for honoring mothers.  In the UK, Mothering Sunday is celebrated in the same way as Mother's Day is celebrated elsewhere. During the sixteenth century, people returned to their mother church, the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service.  Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering", although whether this term preceded the observance of Mothering Sunday is unclear. In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that whole families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented by  conflicting working hours, and servants were not given free days on other occasions.

Mothering Sunday remains in the calendar of some Anglican churches, particularly those with strong English connections.  Miss Annie Oates brought with her from England the tradition of Mothering Sunday and Simnel Cakes and introduced them to St Luke's in 1955.  St. Agnes Altar Guild took over the tradition of making the cakes in 1968 and continues today.  On the 4th Sunday of Lent, enjoy a light repast of traditional simnel cake made with almond paste and currants.

Master Gardener, Sally Cunningham

Diocese to host Master Gardener, Sally Cunningham

The next Discover Sunday event comes just in time for the gardening season. Author and Master Gardener Sally Cunningham will present "Peeking at Private Gardens" on Sunday, March 30th at 2:00 p.m. in the Diocesan Ministry Center located at 1064 Brighton Road in Tonawanda.

Sally will share lessons from the best of Buffalo's National Garden Festival gardens with tips to create your own heavenly spaces this summer. Copies of her book, "Great Garden Companions," will be available for purchase, and Sally will be happy to sign them. The event is free and open to all, but seating is limited, so please reserve a seat at www.episcopalwny.org and follow the "register now" prompt. Parking is behind the Diocesan Center entering off Fries Road, and use the building entrance adjacent to the parking lot.

Driving Volunteer?

A volunteer with a car is needed to deliver the food and care items we collect.  Call the church office - 483-6405 - if you can offer to deliver to the local food pantries, and/or to the Safe House.  Once a week is all that is needed.
