"Every time God forgives us, God is saying

that God's own rules do not matter

as much as the relationship that God wants

to create with us."    - Richard Rohr

Father Richard Rohr is a Franciscan (Roman Catholic) priest and author. Father Rohr talks about the two halves of life as presented in his book "Falling Upward".  The concepts are very applicable to how and why we do formation in the context of the church.  Fr. Rohr's thoughts are there are two halves of life that all human beings find in themselves, and that God calls us to the second half of life.

The first half of life is essentially learning the law. Through our growth as human beings we learn how to take control. We learn the difference between right and wrong. During this stage we are striving, performing, and achieving in order to succeed. He has found that this stage is important, but can be rather ego-centric. This stage is characterized best by learning the Ten Commandments.

The second half of life is essentially defining the law. Father Rohr says this is the hardest stage to enter because it requires us to give control over to God. We move from fearing God as a judgmental authority figure, to a loving God as a parental figure.  During this stage we become the true self that God has given us. This stage is very soul-centric, and is best by characterized by the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount.

These conversations result in practical ideas for use in our own church family.

Among those are:

ˇ         Being more intentional about Parent - Family ministries

ˇ         Creating more ownership of our programs within the church that support and help plan those programs.

(excerpted from Miguel's time spent at Forma Tapestry Conference in New Mexico last year, and still applicable to our life today in St. Luke's)
