The VOICE of St. Luke's - #19
January 2014
 Crazy Christians Unite!

Are you a crazy Christian? You may not think of yourself in that way, having been brought up properly in the Episcopal or other tradition, and having done your best to fit in and not draw attention to yourself most of your life.

But Bishop Michael Curry suggests otherwise.

He believes that to truly follow Jesus, to want to live a life that has been transformed and is transforming the world, is a pretty crazy idea. He says in his book Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus, that to live the countercultural message of Jesus to love our enemies, forgive those who hurt us, and even TRY to be a peacemaker in our violent culture is pretty crazy, and always has been.

But it's also a life filled with joy in our kinship with other Christians, the joy of seeing our fellow Christians grow and become transformed themselves, and the joy of seeing new members of the faith take hold of it, and become truly themselves in the process.

Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts-Schori writes this in the forward to Bishop Curry's book: "It is indeed a crazy dream, but the Body of Christ can most certainly help to build the kingdom, transform brokenness, and renew the face of the earth."

Bishop Curry, the Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, will be the guest preacher at St. Philip's, Buffalo, Friday, January 31st, at 5pm Celebration Worship with the Bishop, and then will speak at the Diocesan Ministry Center Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. He promises to be inspiring and challenging, and it's guaranteed that you will want to jump on board his happy band of crazy Christians.

Prayer of Self-Dedication, BCP 832

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; then use us, we pray, as you will, and always for your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
CHURCH SCHOOL

Goodness: putting others first

"The Golden Rule," to treat others as we want to be treated. God has always given His people guidance on how they should treat one another. We tend to be selfish, unless trained otherwise. But God wants us to be considerate of others. He said that we should treat others the way we would like to be treated. How do you like to be treated?

YOUTH NEWS

Youth Formation Steering Committee

Come help steer the future

We have recruited an incredible group of people who will steer the future of the youth formation here at St. Luke's. If you are interested in being on this committee and helping to plan for the future of Youth Ministries, we invite you to please come talk to Miguel.  The Next Meeting of YFSC is Tuesday, Jan 21st at 7 pm.

SLY Partnering for the future

With all the changes taking place at St. Luke's we want to make sure the Youth, and their families are well cared for and shown that we love and appreciate them here at St. Luke's. We are a Family. We'd like to partner congregation members and youth families during the time of transition, primarily checking in with the young people and their family just to let them know that St. Luke's loves them and cares about them. This is a great "low impact" way to be part of youth ministry here at St. Luke's, and get to know the younger members of our congregational family. If you are interested in helping out in this way please speak to Miguel, Madre Liz, or one of the wardens.

JOURNEY OF FAITH

Join us on our Journey of Faith Tuesday evenings at 7 pm.  This 8 week class is an opportunity to learn about the faith of the Episcopal Church and who we are at St. Luke's. For more information contact the church office, 483-6405, or Madre Liz

                              Simmons.

The Wednesday Group - January 22nd

The Wednesday Group is a special time for senior members of our parish to gather together for worship, lunch and a program in the undercroft at St. Luke's on the 4th Wednesday of the month.  Don Wormuth schedules the programs, and for January we'll enjoy a music and comedy program when we welcome "The Ding-A-Lings" from Emeritus. Coffee is available at 11 am, the service begins at 11:30 and the luncheon and program follow.  For more information or to arrange a ride, call the church office at 483-6405, or Liz McIntyre, 664-2873.
