Little Acts to Change the World

There is a popular quote that says, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care". It's a cliché that many of us take for granted these days, and never really put the lesson into practice. We have turned service and volunteering into an insurmountable task that requires the most sacrifice, time, and energy we could possibly muster. But the truth is much simpler than that: Little acts can change the world.

On October 30th the Justice League, our weekly Wednesday night youth program, dressed as superheroes and marched from George Washington Middle School to Jamestown High School. They carried signs of protest, and signs of acceptance. These signs stated things like: "Quit the bullying j-town", "Love your Neighbor as yourself", "Be Nice", and "It's called love". They didn't encounter very many people along the way, but they had a lot of fun.

The next morning I posted a photo on facebook of us holding our signs up proudly. I was surprised to find how quickly it garnered attention from a lot of unexpected sources. I received a message a few hours later from a friend who has had a lot of run-ins with unwelcoming church people. She told me that the picture brought her to tears. That it showed her that God has not given up on her. She told me that through that picture she realized that "not all Christians are bad". I count that as a win!

S.L.Y.'s small act of standing up and stating we don't accept bullying, we want to be a community of love, changed the world for at least one person. You never know how a simple act will change the world for someone. That is what youth ministry, children's ministry, or any ministry for that matter is, small acts of kindness from everyday people. As I said before, we make it much harder than it needs to be, and we talk ourselves out of doing the small acts that can change the world for that one person that so needs it.

Have you been talking yourself out of doing something? Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few..." All a ministry needs from you is one small act. Do you have ears? Come listen. Do you have hands? Come fold. Do you have a body? Come be present. Come change the world for someone through a little act of kindness.

I just wanted to share with you how a ministry here at St. Luke's changed the world for one person through one small act.

ODE FOR ST. CECILIA'S DAY ~ Nov 22

Friday evening November 22, the St. Luke's Festival Choir will present its annual Choral Masterwork concert at 8 pm.  Admission is free.

Each year on the Friday before Thanksgiving, our regular choir is joined by other interested singers from our community to perform a major choral composition which is above and beyond the music we regularly sing in Sunday worship.  Following our successes with the Vivaldi GLORIA in 2011 and the Bach MAGNIFICAT in 2012, the Festival Choir will this year present a somewhat more obscure work, the ODE FOR ST. CECILIA'S DAY by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759).

Handel's setting of the poem was first performed on November 22, 1739, so we therefore will be presenting it on the 274th anniversary of its premier.

The work beautifully showcases the abilities of our soloists:  Jim Beal, Victoria McIlvain, Cáitlín O'Reilly, and Catherine Way. Instrumentation will include violin, cello, timpani, organ, and piano.

Please join us for this wonderful evening of music, and bring a friend!

CHURCH SCHOOL

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Samaritan's Purse works with local churches and partners to deliver gifts and share the Good News of Jesus Christ through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child.  This year our church school will participate by bringing in boxes and helping to fill them.  Gifts could include a package of crayons, coloring book(s), socks, a new toy, toothbrush, toothpaste, stuffed animals; you get the idea.  Gifts are for boys and girls ages 2-14.

Collection week is Nov 18-25, so we're getting a bit of a late start on this, but with your help we can make a bright Christmas for other children.  Miss Debbie will deliver the filled shoeboxes to the local drop off on Monday, Nov 25th.  The reason we celebrate Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ, the greatest gift of all.  Let's share that gift through Operation Christmas Child.

Prayer for Calling a Rector

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on this your St. Luke's Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish that we may receive the faithful pastor you have chosen for us, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ ourLord. Amen.

Prayer of Self-Dedication, BCP 832

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; then use us, we pray, as you will, and always for your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.
SHOPPERS' LUNCHEON A GREAT SUCCESS!

Thanks so all who helped make this such a huge success.  Jack and I are very grateful for all the cooperation.

Thank you all, Wilma & Jack Twinam

All who worked the luncheon - GREAT JOB!  I have never been so tired in all my life!  We heard so many great remarks - people who said they would never miss this luncheon.  I know it is a lot of work but we helped the needy and hungry and those hungry for fellowship and smiles.  Saw nothing but smiles and it really soothed the soul.  I am so proud of my St Luke's family.      ~ Sheila Eaglesome

The real kudos belong to Wilma and Jack who have worked tirelessly since summer!  They've volunteered countless hours for this endeavor and it all came off spectacularly!!  Congratulations to all!                                                                                          ~ Catherine Way

Kudos to both of you!  Well done! And we had a lot of fun, too!  It is a GOOD family!  Wouldn't miss this day for anything!           -Sally Ulrich

It was a pleasure working with such dedicated people.  Wilma and Jack deserve a lot of credit for all they do for the church and the thrift shop.      ~ Alice Paulus

Awesome!! And again, thanks to Wilma and Jack Twinam....huge job and you both are always smiling!                             ~ Sharon Drennen

All of you volunteers, Wilma and Jack especially, should be proud of such a herculean effort that you all put in. I was very impressed with the whole event, and how well it was organized!     - (Madre) Liz
