A Forward-Thinking Diocesan Convention

As I drove to Diocesan Convention last Friday, I prayed, "Help me to get through this. Help me to see your church as YOU see it." I was expecting convention to be like all conventions I had attended for the last four years: dry, dominated grim, humorless talks favoring or opposing resolutions, and a church taking itself way too seriously.

I was delightfully wrong about all that.

Sure, there were some resolutions, and some debate, which I actually appreciate, having been in a diocese where the Bishop discouraged debate over resolutions. And there were elections to many offices, and voting on that. But what I wasn't prepared for was the good spirit and humor with which much of it was presented. I also wasn't prepared for the inspirational talk by the Bishop, which actually DID inspire.

We are privileged here in the Diocese of Western New York to have a Bishop who is willing to talk about struggles churches are facing with declining numbers, and to suggest that this is a diocesan-wide problem AND solution. One of those solutions he is proposing is to celebrate our successes together, and to work together for solutions to our collective struggles.

We also heard from Texas Bishop Andrew Doyle, author of the book Unabashedly Episcopalian, which we have been reading as a diocese. He had the delivery of a comedian, but the heart of an evangelist.  As his book implies, he is proud to be an Episcopalian, and wants to remind people of all that we have to offer. As he says, "We all chose the Episcopal church at some point. Deep down we remember why."

The spirit of this love for our church is that if we can reclaim some of that passion for why we CHOOSE to be Episcopalian, some of it might rub off and attract others to want to be part of it all.

After a thoroughly enjoyable convention, complete with laughter and Tweeting and upbeat, promising talks, I realized on the way home that my prayer had been answered. I could see the church as God must see it: a struggling, proud, spirit-filled group of people who want others to join us.

SUNDAY ADULT FORUM

"Update of Jonathan's House for Orphans in the Central African Republic"

On Sunday, November 3, the Forum will bring back Denise Holder to talk with us about an update on Jonathan's House for Orphans in the Central African Republic.  Work had begun on the orphanage and Denise had become involved with this effort and ministry.  At that time there had been an uprising and rebels had taken control of the capital and most of that country, without much interference with the work being done there at this site.  We are hoping to hear that work has progressed.  Join the Forum at 9:00 am.

Sunday, November 10th, the Forum will host our own Kathy VanHorn, who will talk with us about YANAA, Inc. (You Are Not Alone Anymore).
