Maintaining a Sense of Vibrancy

One of the main goals that the Vestry set during this time of transition between rectors of St. Luke's was to "not lose momentum." They said they were proud that St. Luke's is a very active parish, with many programs for parishioners of all ages, as well as contributions to the larger community.

Vestry members said very clearly that they did not want to lose that level of activity in the parish programs, but hope to maintain the vibrancy that marks St. Luke's as an attractive parish.

One of the best ways to maintain vibrancy is for members to keep SHOWING UP: to church, to adult forum, to the various group events, and parish community social activities. It is tempting to go into a "wait-until-the-next-rector" mode, to wait to be coaxed and encouraged, but until then, to slow down regular attendance, and any planning for the near future.

The problem with this "wait-until-" mode is that it isn't that spiritually edifying. It is dependent on another person (albeit a priest) to provide the spiritual impetus for my faith, and it is passive at best. When we are in a passively waiting mode (as opposed to a pregnant sense of active reflection as in Advent), we close our ears to the ways that the Holy Spirit is engaging with us RIGHT NOW, constantly re-creating us and nudging us closer toward wholeness and unity with God.

Someone once said that we can only step into the same part of a river ONCE, because it is always made new, it is always different, though we may step into the same location of the river again. This is an excellent metaphor for our spiritual lives. Who we are this moment is different, and the action of God upon us is different, than it will be next week, even the next moment.

If I am waiting passively for an event to happen before I start living my life, I may miss out on a dynamic encounter with God, and what God may be saying to me, in this moment.

Be part of what makes St. Luke's so vibrant: its people. Show up, and see how God is re-creating St. Luke's NOW!

CHANGE SUNDAY - Nov 3
The change in your pocket can support a big change for the young people of our diocese!  For the last several years Youth Commission has asked the congregations of the diocese to take up a special collection on the Sunday of the Fall time change -this year on Sunday, November 3.  That money is put in a special scholarship fund used to make sure none of our youth are turned away because of financial hardship.  Our goal this year is to raise money to support the young people going to the Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) next summer in Philadelphia PA. The transportation and registration fees are expected to run between $600-700 per young person. The money raised today from all over the diocese means that we can lower that cost so that more young people will be able to go to this great event.   EYE is the church wide gathering of high school aged Episcopalians and only happens once every three years.   The great thing aboutChange Sunday is that it doesn't require a great deal from any one person or even any one congregation. All of us pitching a little can create a great deal of change!  We hope you'll help!
And never forget that $10 is change for $20!

Chautauqua Co Sheriff - Smart911

Smart911 offered by Chaut Co Sheriff Department

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office would like to spread the word about the Smart911 service offered to residents for free.  Smart911 allows people to create a Safety Profile that will be visible to 9-1-1 call takers in the event of an emergency call. Citizens create profiles for many reasons. Some want to make sure 9-1-1 knows they have a medical condition or allergy, others want to provide their exact address in case they call from a cell phone. You can also list your vehicle information, emergency contacts and even pets.  Smart911 is an important and lifesaving service and we are helping the Sheriff's office to educate our community about the service to keep families better protected.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office at (716) 753-4900or read more online
