When Generosity Gives Back to Us

We have been hearing a lot in our about generosity this summer, through our Sunday readings and in many of my sermons. One quote that we haven't talked about is from the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi, which says "It is in giving that we receive."

Anyone who has ever done regular volunteer work for any length of time will tell you that they always receive much more than they feel they have given, through the interactions, relationships, appreciation, and sense of accomplishment that come from being generous with one's time.

Generous benefactors, who give large sums of money, will tell you that the satisfaction of doing something important with the gifts that they have so freely received far outweighs the payout.

And from our readings and sermons, it seems that generosity helps us to be less fearful that our needs won't be met, helps us to trust God's grace more, and makes us more compassionate as human beings. We receive so much more than we have given as the result of being generous.

The theme of this year's pledge campaign is "Extravagant Generosity," a program based on Methodist Bishop Robert Schnase's groundbreaking book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, which promises to make you think about giving in a whole new light.

Throughout the campaign, which will kick off on Sunday, September 22 with a brunch after the 10 a.m. service, we will hear stories from parishioners about their experience of giving, and ways that generosity has transformed their faith. The culmination of this focus on stewardship will be with "Joyful Sunday", when parishioners will be asked to bring to the altar their pledges for the 2014 year, but also their hearts, as we recommit ourselves to the ministries God is calling us to do.

Our parish leaders who are heading up the campaign are hoping for increased participation in pledging for the coming year, because these pledges allow us to make better decisions about next year's budget, as well as the level of commitment of our parishioners. It is also a Vestry goal to decrease our dependence as a parish on the endowment fund, from which we are currently drawing an unsustainable 5 percent each year.

When you receive your pledge card, which will be in the form of a brochure entitled "Extravagant Generosity", we hope that you will consider prayerfully and with gratitude God's gifts to you, responding generously, and increasing your pledge as a token of your commitment to St. Luke's future ministries.

Prayer of Self-Dedication, BCP 832

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; then use us, we pray, as you will, and always for your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.
Christian Formation

What is Christian Formation?  How does St. Luke's do formation?  As defined on our website:

"Christian formation/education is an ongoing process, just as one's faith journey is never ending.  'Formation' goes beyond class studies to include mentoring, retreats, inter-generational activities and special events..."

The most important aspect of formation is the nurturing of your relationship with God and the development of your faith.  We encourage all to take the journey, and that we are here to walk together, as we all are still growing in our faith and relationship with God.  St. Luke's offers many opportunities for you to explore your faith.  At St. Luke's, formation is from "cradle-to-grave" - we have a nursery for the youngest of us; we have a church school under the gifted leadership of Debbie Cardone; we have a youth program and education led by Miguel Covarrubias, and there is also adult formation.  Forming a Christian life is a life-long adventure.  Join us Sundays - and see what else we have to offer.

Sunday Church School

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control;  Galatians 5:22-25

Church School classes are Pre-K through grade 6; nursery care is also available with Sarah Nazzaro.  Looking forward to seeing all our children back to have fun in Church School classes as we rotate our lessons through Bible Adventures, creativity in the Re-Creation art room, and fun at St. Luke's Cinema with videos. It is important for us all to know how to live as children of God.Gather in the undercroft for breakfast time, then on to the classrooms for fun!

ADULT FORUM

The Adult Forum program begins Sunday, September 15 with Karen Collins, Chair of our Rector Search Committee giving us an update on the search process.  The Forum Planning Committee has been working on other offerings and promises you an interesting autumn in the Forum.  Be sure to join us Sunday mornings at 9 am on the stage in the undercroft.

Sunday, September 22nd, we'll turn to a very serious - and challenging - topic...Human trafficking.  Stuart Bauer, will be present to give a quick overview of this subject.  There are things going on around us of which we may not be aware.  As brothers and sisters in Christ, we should know what is happening to fellow human beings.  It may not affect us directly, but somewhere, somehow it is affecting the human race. A subject not to be ignored.

Unabashedly Episcopalian

Discussions for our book study will begin on Monday, September 23 at 7:00 pm in the undercroft (More detailed information about location is forthcoming!). Our aim is to get through the book before the Diocesan Convention which is the end of October.  Let's start by having the first three chapters read and then we will determine our frequency of meeting and how much to discuss at each gathering.  Any questions please talk with Barbara Bumsted.

Prayer for calling a Rector,

 BCP 818

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on this your St. Luke's Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive the faithful pastor you have chosen, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Message from the Bishop

Dear Parishioners of St. Luke's:

Even though I was on vacation in New York City at the time, I did learn of the lightning strike at St. Luke's.   I am so thankful no one was injured and that the lightening did not spark a fire.

I wish you God's blessings as you move through the process of having the damage assessed and repaired.

Blessings in Christ,

Bishop Bill
