What Mission Fields Beckon to You?

"The college campus is a mission field," she said. I was struck by these words that the Rev. Heather Allport-Cohoon used Sunday when she talked about her ministry to college students at Jamestown Community College (and another small college whose name escapes me right now).

A mission field. As an Episcopalian since I was 10 years old, the words leave me feeling a little uncomfortable, but also intrigued. The discomfort comes from the idea that we should be about converting people who aren't Christian, maybe even people who already have a faith tradition and a great relationship with God. I believe, as many Episcopalians do, that many other faith traditions lead to God, and that God manifests a way to salvation in many different ways.

The part that intrigues me is that there are also many, many more people nowadays without any spiritual moorings, without any experience with faith matters, and who could use some guidance (albeit, gentle-handed) in the great questions of faith.

One of the excuses many of us used for many years for NOT inviting people to church, or even telling them about our own beliefs is that "they have their own churches, and it's rude of me to try to take them away from their churches." This is just not true anymore. More people than NOT are staying away from church, perhaps because of a bad experience with religion, a grudge they feel toward a former minister of theirs, or even because they don't know where to start trying to find a parish. We can't use our old excuse anymore.

Now, there are many unploughed mission fields: the youth in our neighborhoods who hang out at the dry cleaner next to Jamestown High School; the neighbor who cuts our little strip of property between driveways without being asked; the convenience store clerk that we see regularly when we buy that quick carton of milk (although she might have to work on Sunday morning; but, heh! we have a Saturday service!)

At St. Anthony of the Desert Episcopal Church in east Scottsdale, AZ, there is a sign facing into the parking lot so people can read it as they are leaving church. "You are now entering the mission field" it reads. A good reminder not to take everything we received in Sunday worship and put it away for the week.

We are charged in our Baptismal covenant, which we renew every time we have a Baptism, "Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?" It's not enough to just let our actions speak for themselves (although it IS a good start!). We need to share why we do what we do, so people can connect our behavior to the Gospel we proclaim.

Prayer for the Calling of a Rector

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on this your St. Luke's Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish that we may receive the faithful pastor you have chosen for us, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Altar flowers are a beautiful way to offer thanksgiving for blessings, or to remember a loved one as a memorial.  Anyone desiring to have flowers placed on our altars as a memorial or thanksgiving is welcome to do so.  The cost for the two vases is $60.  To sign up for a Sunday, see the Flower Board in the undercroft by the stage; or call the church office - 483-6405.

God's Pantry

GOD's Pantry at First Covenant Church

With the closing of Joint Neighborhood Project comes additional need in our community. First Covenant Church hosts "God's Pantry" each Tuesday 10 am - 2 pm (except the 1st Tuesday of each month).
Let's continue St Luke's tradition of 3rd Sunday Food Pantry support and make a concerted effort to help supply local Food Pantries. Needed items include: canned meats (tuna, chicken, ham, corned beef hash); peanut butter & jelly; hearty soups; canned fruit; cereal; non-fat dry milk; pasta & pasta sauces; and any kind of "Helpers," Ronis, or boxed meals.
Many families also struggle with toiletries as these items are not purchasable with food stamps.  Toilet paper, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, laundry soap, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and cleaning supplies are also welcome.
You may drop donations off at 1st Covenant's office 9 am - 4 pm, or bring donation to St. Luke's on Sundays and place them in the baskets.

Unabashedly Episcopalian

An Invitation from Bishop Franklin

Bishop Franklin invites everyone in the diocese to read this fall the book Unabashedly Episcopalian by Bishop Andrew Doyle. It is his hope that Bishop Doyle's words will help to spark energy, creativity and new ideas as our diocese strives make an impact in the 21st century.
Through a special arrangement with the publisher, we are able to place a bulk order for this book and offer it to members of the diocese for just $10 per copy. Books will be delivered to churches around Labor Day.
Let the Barbara Bumsted know if you want to participate and if you need a book.  The order will be placed with Diocese in mid to late July.  If you want to order the book on your own, feel free!
