VOICE of St Luke's

From the Music Director ....
Here at St. Luke's we have a tremendous amount of musical talent among our youth. In the past few weeks our youth have participated musically in three different services of worship, and in all three instances their contributions were exemplary. I'd like to take this opportunity to recount the three instances in the order in which they occurred.
On May 5, Joel Allport-Cohoon did a superb job singing the Sursum Corda. I felt it was wonderful to hear a young person like him sing this ancient chant so accurately and so expressively. Bravo, Joel!
Then, on May 19 the Youth Choir helped us to celebrate Pentecost by singing "O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing" as the anthem. There were 9 kids in the Youth Choir that day, which is a record since I've been at St. Luke's. The kids did a beautiful job that day. Special recognition should go to the soloists: Madeline DeJoy, Maria Davila, Abby Monaghan, and Gavin Card. What a treat it was to have this delightful group of youngsters help us celebrate the birthday of the church!
And most recently, on June 2 our Adult Choir was joined by Gavin Card and Victoria McIlvain for the beautiful "Pie Jesu" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Gavin sang the part which is designated for a boy soprano, while the other solo soprano part was sung by Victoria. Both soloists and choir did an exceptionally wonderful job that day. Bravo to all!
Both the Adult and Youth Choirs are now on vacation for the month of June. In July the Adult Choir will begin sectional rehearsals for the "Ode for Saint Cecilia's Day" by George Frideric Handel. In keeping with the Adult Choir's tradition of performing a great choral work in an evening concert, we will perform this remarkable composition on Friday evening November 22. I hope our choir will once again be joined by many additional singers from our parish and from the greater Jamestown community. If you would consider singing with us, or if you know someone who might, please see me for details.

Prayer for the Calling of a Rector
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on this your St. Luke's Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish that we may receive the faithful pastor you have chosen for us, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Unabashedly Episcopalian
An Invitation from Bishop Franklin
Bishop Franklin invites everyone in the diocese to read this fall the book Unabashedly Episcopalian by Bishop Andrew Doyle. It is his hope that Bishop Doyle's words will help to spark energy, creativity and new ideas as our diocese strives make an impact in the 21st century.
Through a special arrangement with the publisher, we are able to place a bulk order for this book and offer it to members of the diocese for just $10 per copy. Books will be delivered to churches around Labor Day.
Let the Barbara Bumsted know if you want to participate and if you need a book. The order will be placed with Diocese in mid to late July. If you want to order the book on your own, feel free!
