Where to find grace in tragedies
|
| |
There have been a lot of tragedies lately. The shootings in Newtown, CT; the bombings in Boston; and most recently, the tornadoes in Oklahoma. Add this to almost daily reports of bombings in the Middle East, and it would be easy to become so overwhelmed that you have to numb out all the bad news.
Or you could look for the helpers.
Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" fame tells of the very wise words of his mother when he was a young child.
In his book Mr. Rogers' Parenting Book, he writes, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"
For us as Christians, we know that these helpers are God's hands at work in the world, proof that God does respond very quickly to prayers in the midst of a tragedy. Similarly, when we feel ourselves stirred to respond, that is the Holy Spirit nudging us to be the hands of God ourselves.
One of the best organizations in the world for responding to disasters and other needs is Episcopal Relief and Development, centered with the national Church. All of the money donated to ERD goes directly to aid families, villages, and churches throughout the world. None of the donated money pays for infrastructure or overhead of the ERD, because the national Church underwrites this expense.
If you have never seen it, check out the ERD website at http://www.episcopalrelief.org/. You may feel proud to be an Episcopalian when you see the scope and nature of all that the church is doing throughout the world. You may even feel moved to be a regular monthly giver.
In the United States, you can also give directly to the dioceses that are affected by a disaster. In the case of the tornado victims, you can give directly to the Diocese of Oklahoma, and that money will be given to those in need, including churches that have been destroyed by the storms, although the Bishop of Oklahoma's diocese reports that Episcopal churches received minimal, if any, damage. Staff members of the various churches did, however, lose their homes in the devastation. The address for the Diocese of Oklahoma is 924 N Robinson, Oklahoma City, OK 73102.

Adult Forum

For our final Adult Forum of the program year, the Right Rev. Dr. R. William Franklin, Bishop of Western New York, will join us Sunday, June 2nd, to discuss his time in Rome. Bishop Franklin was living in Rome at the beginning of the search for our new diocesan bishop and we thought it would be very interesting to learn what he did there.

Update from the Rector Search Committee
|
|
The Search Committee continues to be hard at work, seeking our next Rector. The parish profile is in its final draft form. Once approved by the Vestry the profile will be posted and we will begin accepting applications. This should be completed within the next month, which means we are right on schedule.
We are also creating a parish website as well as a companion website specifically for the rector search. For this, we have contracted with a professional website designer. Our goal is for our websites to be both attractive and easy for people to find the information they seek. The website will be updated as needed by St. Luke's staff. The website for the Search will allow applicants to directly upload their information to us and the Search Committee will have secure password-protected access to download and review their application details.
Please keep us in your prayers as we take this journey together.

Pastoral Care
|
|
Just as your biological family worries about you, we, your spiritual family, worry about you also. We would like to know when something happens to you so we can minister to you, pray for you, and visit. If you know that you will be having a stay in the hospital, please contact the church to let us know. If you find yourself unexpectedly admitted to the hospital, please ask to have the church contacted. The hospitals do not regularly call the churches due to the current HIPPA laws. We're here for you; please help us to help you.
