How to Defrag Your Hard Drive

Ever have that feeling of being dragged down, slowed down by things in your life not going as smoothly as they could? Your actions keep getting hijacked by little interruptions and problems; things don't flow the way they should.

On a spiritual level, your prayer life is sluggish, and you don't seem to be getting those hunches and intuitive thoughts that you usually count on. You feel fuzzy about even the basics of your faith: is God in charge of anything? Does prayer even     matter? And the big questions, like what is your purpose, and where are we going as human beings, just seem overwhelming.

When you defragment a computer hard drive, what you are doing (and this is a completely amateur description; forgive me if you are a computer expert) is taking commands and tasks to the computer that have gotten spread out all over the computer's memory, and grouping them together into similar categories. This allows the computer to function more efficiently, because the similar tasks can talk to each other better.

In a similar way, when you defrag your spiritual and mental hard drive, you are re-arranging the priorities in your life in such a way that your actions are aligned with your values. You remind yourself of your life purpose, and "delete" those activities that you are doing that are NOT in alignment with your core values.

Next, you re-emphasize those things you are doing that affirm your life purpose, and try to build those into your activities in a more prominent way. If having coffee regularly with that good friend helps motivate you to be at your best, make sure you do that more often. And if spending time with those family members always leaves you feeling drained and inadequate, try to avoid them when possible.

Finally, be sure to stay connected to the Source of your life purpose, praying more regularly, reading inspiring material like the Bible or a daily meditation book, and of course, worshiping regularly and receiving communion as often as possible. Someone once described communion as "rebooting my system."

Again, stay connected to the Source of all power and life and creativity. Your hard drive definitely won't work if it's unplugged.

Pastoral Care

Just as your biological family worries about you, we, your spiritual family, worry about you also.  We would like to know when something happens to you so we can minister to you, pray for you, and visit.  If you know that you will be having a stay in the hospital, please contact the church to let us know.  If you find yourself unexpectedly admitted to the hospital, please ask to have the church contacted.  The hospitals do not regularly call the churches due to the current HIPPA laws.  We're here for you; please help us to help you.

Sheriff's  Smart911

Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office is spreading the word about the Smart911 service offered to residents for free.  Smart911 allows people to create a Safety Profile that will be visible to 9-1-1 call takers in the event of an emergency call. Citizens create profiles for many reasons. Some want to make sure 9-1-1 knows they have a medical condition or allergy, others want to provide their exact address in case they call from a cell phone. You can also list your vehicle information, emergency contacts and even pets. Smart911 is an important and lifesaving service.   Help educate our community about the service to keep families better protected.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office at (716) 753-4900.
