What makes you say 'Wow!'?

The NPR radio show "On Point" yesterday featured a wildlife expert as guest, and one question they were asking was "What are you passionate about that makes you say 'Wow!'?" The point they were making is that there are amazing animals in wildlife that are so amazing that you will want to help conserve and preserve their lives.

I thought this is a great way to look at spirituality, and the heart of it, which has nothing to do with sitting or kneeling in a pew, dutifully saying a prayer that someone else wrote, not letting your heart be touched by it. It is this sort of religion that turns people off to church.

But living, breathing daily spirituality is something with which everyone can relate.

In a nutshell, spirituality is "anything that makes you say 'Wow!'" A gorgeous sunset, a fantastical creature, the breathtaking beauty of a cathedral, a child soloist whose clear treble voice sings of innocence; a brilliant painting that enfolds you into a scene-- all are experiences that take you to that place within yourself that recognizes God in our midst, a glimpse of God's Creation.

I want you to pay close attention to that feeling, and when you have it, don't just move on to other things right away. Locate in your body where that amazement is feeling; breathe in the beauty or awe or wonder, and give thanks to the Creator.

If God can create such beauty, what must God be like? Such imagination, such artistic vision, such beauty. And we, too, are one of those creations. The human body, itself, is an amazing organism with all of its intricacies and workings. And what a universe we live in! The possibilities for admiring and saying "Wow!" are endless, if we are paying attention.

 Pentecost
Sunday, May 19th

Pentecost is the day when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church.  Often called the "birthday" of the church, it was after the disciples received the Holy Spirit that they really began to spread the good news of Jesus out into the whole world.  We encourage you to wear red and celebrate this major feast with us.

Adult Forum
Sadly, we have no Adult Forum plans for this Sunday,
May 19, but on May 26, our very own Music Director, Andy Schmidt will join us in the Forum to discuss the music here at St. Luke's - and his dreams for us.   Join in at 9 am on the stage area in the undercroft.

Remembering Mothers' Day

From the Mother's Day Brunch

The Men's Group hosted our annual Mother's Day Brunch, which proved to be very successful. Attendance was up by quite a bit, the food was delicious (Yes ladies- men can cook casseroles very well), and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. My thanks goes out to all of the men who participated in making this event a reality, and especially to Chip Ulrich, who coordinated the event. We take great pleasure in offering this to the church each year (Improved greatly by the fact that I don't cook, I only serve food and wash dishes.)

To All the Wonderful Men of St. Luke's Church,

Thank you so very, very much for a wonderful day, and delicious brunch, including the special beverages!  You are truly our champions.  You made each one of us ladies feel special and appreciated.  Thank you for caring so much!
