To Pray is to Hope
|
| |
In the book we are using for our confirmation class for adults, one of the writers, the Rev. Bill Lewellis, says that "to pray is to dream, to hope, to expect, to trust, to imagine."
Who knew?
I'm sure he isn't talking about wish lists, of praying like a child sitting on Santa's lap recites a list of hoped-for gifts. And while often, our prayers ARE requests of God -- "take care of Joe; help my daughter get that house she wants; don't let anything happen to Meghan; help me" -- this doesn't have to be our only reason for praying.
Imagine lifting your deepest hopes and dreams to God: hopes about your uncertain future, fears about your marriage, dreams for your young (and even, adult) children. It is an act of letting go, this way of praying, an act of trusting God with the outcome, all the while knowing that you REALLY hope it will all turn out okay. Of course!
And I have come to believe, through discoveries in new physics of all places, that when we pray, we create energy that influences the future. I don't mean in place of God, but instead that we are co-creating with God a future that is closer to what we hope for than would otherwise have happened.
This new discovery of physics is what mystics have been saying for centuries now, but it is starting to permeate the fields of physics, sociology, and psychology in major ways. Psychologists are beginning to realize that one's way of thinking NOW about a past traumatic event is much more important than insight into WHY an event happened, or even how that event has shaped our lives. If we can see it realistically and with positive re-framing, we can transform our emotions and our future.
We can have hope. And with that hope we can pray. And with that prayer comes the healing.
So, keep praying. Don't hold back.
Your future depends upon it.

On Sunday, May 5, the Winged Ox Players will be front and center in the Forum talking with us about their theatrical organization - what it is, why it is and what is the next production. The group was started by members of St. Luke's, although it is open to the public. They have already had two productions - the most recent held here at St. Luke's, "Freud's Last Session" which starred our own Matt Smith and Miguel Covarrubias.
