From our Music Director ~ Andy Schmidt

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR...
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the many very talented volunteers who have made our music so special and so meaningful in the past couple weeks.  Three musical events particularly stand out in my mind, and I would like to recount them in chronological order.

First was the Youth Choir's presentation of "Lord, who throughout these forty days" on March 17.  It was wonderful to have eight young singers participate in Youth Choir that day.  The solos by Madeline DeJoy and Gavin Card, and the harmony part sung by Chris Butler were particularly well-done.  The kids sang beautifully that day, and I was very proud of them.

Then, on March 24, the Adult Choir sang a very demanding and very moving Palm Sunday anthem by Harold Friedell entitled "The Way to Jerusalem".  Harold Friedell (1905-1958) is best known as the composer of "Draw Us in the Spirit's Tether".  "The Way to Jerusalem" is in some respects similar to "Spirit's Tether", although longer and quite a bit more difficult.  The choir worked hard to learn this challenging anthem, and I felt the end result was frankly superb.  This anthem also featured a solo which was beautifully sung by Jim Beal.

Finally, the Adult Choir celebrated the joy of Easter Sunday with the incomparable "Alleluia" by Randall Thompson (1899-1984).  The choir did a very fine job on this anthem as well, and I was particularly pleased that we had 16 singers in the choir that day.

To every singer in each of our choirs, please let me say THANK YOU for sharing your time and talent in the music ministries of St. Luke's.

Additionally, I would like to call the congregation's attention to an upcoming event which I am very excited about.   On Sunday afternoon May 5 at 4:00 the Chautauqua chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present its annual members' recital.  This event is held each year at a different church in the Jamestown area, and this year it will be held at St. Luke's!I have participated in this event nearly every year for the past 15 or so years, but I have never before had the honor of hosting it.  Many area organists will perform including myself, Ron McEntire, Brian Bogey, Donna Gatz, Jack Hemink, and several others.  Each organist will play one piece, some of which may also include another instrumental soloist.  The annual members' recital is always a very enjoyable event, and I hope it will attract a large audience this year.   All are invited, and admission is free.

St Luke's PARENT Ministry

St. Luke's Parent Ministry

For parents of teens, led by parents of former teens!

Have you been feeling like you can't take any more?  Have you thought more than once, "Is this the same child I gave birth to?"  Do you, like your child, feel like nobody in the world can understand what you are going through? Do you feel alone, helpless, or like pulling your hair out? --- Well, we are here to help! On Wednesday April 24th, 2013, a new ministry will begin in the form of a semi-monthly support group for parents of teens, led by parents of former teens.  This program is designed to give you, the parent, a safe place to:  vent, ask questions, talk to others like yourself, learn how not to strangle your teen, and generally have a good time with others who are struggling right alongside you. We have a vision to help you as parents of teens to survive and flourish through the adolescent years as well.  These meetings will provide you with some time of rest, prayer, and discussion.  Our first meeting will be in the undercroft of St. Luke's, but in the future we will look to move from the church building to other areas.  We will meet twice each month, and if we find we need more time together we will do so.  Please come and be a part of this group, and find that you belong. This program will run concurrently with the Youth Program at St Luke's, 7-9 pm, so while your teen is in their safe space, you will have a safe space of your own to just be for a while.
