Triage for the Soul in the Midst of a Busy Life

A mentor of mine once described parish ministry as a ministry of triage. The word is more familiar from emergency medical practice, but is also used in the battlefield to sort out who needs the most attention and medical resources immediately.
I would also suggest that in our busy world, our lives take on a sort of triage quality, as we sort out what demands on our time are most urgent, which ones can wait, which ones we really want to do, and then of course, there's the distasteful tasks that wait patiently until we really MUST do them or suffer unpleasant consequences.
In the midst of all of these activities, activities for our SOULS usually get triaged to the bottom of the list. God doesn't demand much of us, the church is all voluntary, there are no grades or attendance rolls for our children in Sunday School, and if we have to argue with our kids about going, it just doesn't seem worth it. In the grand scheme of things, we argue, we can work on our souls when we retire and have more time. I know I do that with the books I really want to read, but set aside in favor of watching March Madness basketball or Person of Interest.
Meanwhile, we wonder why we just aren't feeling a sense of satisfaction with our lives, why our relationships with our children and spouse and friends aren't deeper. When we finally have a chance to take time off, for vacation or because we get sick, we are aware of a gnawing emptiness that is a little discomfiting.
The gradual consequence of not nurturing our souls is that we no longer have an interior life to draw from in relationships, in our creativity, in the living of our lives. It is the interior life grounded in God, as the Source of all love and creativity and order that "colors in" our busy lives and makes them richer. It is grace, and much more, the relationship with the Greatest Lover, that provides meaning and depth to our lives.

ADULT FORMATION - 2013

"How can we sing TOGETHER the Lord's song?..."
Sunday, March 10th, the Forum welcomes Drs. Durriya and Zahid Kairullah from St. Bonaventure University to discuss Islam. The Kairullahs teach in the School of Business at St. Bonaventure, but have visited classes on religion to discuss their faith. This will be an opportunity for us to ask questions and to learn more about Islam.
Sunday, March 17th offers a wonderful opportunity for the Forum group to Skype with Fr. Michael Calabria, who spoke in the Forum a year ago. Fr. Calabria will share his insight on "Extremism" at this Forum.
Please join us at the Adult Forum on Sunday mornings at 9 am for interesting information and discussion!

FLUNKING SAINTHOOD

Flunking Sainthood book discussion is held each Sunday in Lent at 4:30 pm on the stage area in the undercroft.
This is the book recommended by our Diocese as a Diocesan wide opportunity for a Lenten read. Even if you've not gotten the book, or attended the previous gatherings, you are welcome to join in on Sunday afternoons at 4:30. We'll meet the next 3 Sundays and that will conclude the book.
Several parishioners attended the author's presentation at D-Center on Feb 28th. They found the author to be just as fun and lively as she appears to be in her book!

Wednesday Night Lenten Program
The Search Committee is looking for YOU!

*On Wednesday, March 13, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm we will be having an important parish-wide evening to discuss important issues on which the Search Committee needs your input in order to create our Parish Profile and prepare to evaluate applications.
(We will be breaking from the regular Lenten program theme of examining spiritual styles this week, and will get back to it the following week.)
The usual schedule of worship at 6pm and soup supper at 6:30 will continue, and we encourage everyone to come for as much of the evening as possible. However, even if you cannot attend worship or supper, we hope you will make every effort to attend and participate in our Congregational Search Discussion Night.
Thank you all for your continued prayers for our rector search.

Search Committee information

Recently it was suggested that the postcard "question of the week" be put in the VOICE so people have time to ponder their response. The response to these questions is intended to be the first thought that comes to mind. Remember, there are no "wrong" answers.
This is one opportunity to provide the Search Committee with your thoughts, dreams, and hopes for St. Luke's. So, to provide you with an opportunity to ponder, here are the last two questions for Sundays, March 10th and 17th:
- If you could change one thing about St. Luke's, what would it be?
- What do you like best about St Luke's?
We'll see you on Sunday!!
