A Spiritual Antidote for Winter

"I'm so over winter," I have heard from more than one person recently. Wouldn't it be nice to fast forward to Spring about now, and bypass the cold and ice and gray skies? I love the four seasons, and prefer this to Arizona's disorienting two seasons, but enough is enough.

Well, as your faith leader, I have an antidote for the winter doldrums. It's a spiritual exercise that you can do anytime, but ideally at a time when you are most fed up with the cold.

It's best to write this out on paper, preferably a legal pad that will allow you to make a long list. If you can get comfortable in your favorite chair, wearing fleece or flannel, and drinking a hot beverage, it's even better. Take advantage of this weather. It won't be here for much longer! (This is called positive thinking, and is not necessarily faith-based!)

Now, if you're the kind of person that likes numbered lists, write a 1. on the first line. Next to the 1. write the first thing that comes to your mind for which you are grateful. (And it COULD be your mind!) Or the fact that you are inside on this cold day, with a dry roof over your head. And then, write a 2. on the next line, and keep going, until you can't think of anything else.

I guarantee that your Gratitude List will warm you up, leave you feeling a LOT less whiny, and maybe even wonderful. Now that you have done it on paper, you can try the exercise in your head, at any time when you are feeling irritable, or like life isn't fair, or that God isn't doing a very good job of running the universe. A proper response to God, after completing your list, is a simple "Thank you." It's one of the best prayers there is.

If you've not yet taken an opportunity to chat with our Interim Rector, Liz Simmons, now would be a good time to invite her to dinner, or meet her for lunch, or share a cup of coffee with her. The kitchen at the rectory is under construction and Madre Liz has had to relocate her "kitchen" into the hallway.

Contact Liz by calling the church office, 483-6405, her extension is 12; her cell  # is 262-744-9282; or by email at liz.simmons@stlukesjamestown.org

ADULT FORMATION - 2013

"How can we sing TOGETHER the Lord's song?..."

At our Forum on February 17, Jay Phillippi led us in an activity "testing" our knowledge of five religions - including Christianity. The results are still hanging on the stage area of the undercroft. We believe it is important to learn about other religions in order to be able to listen and communicate better, and to become community with one another.

On Sunday, February 24, Rabbi Allen Podet, of Temple Hesed Abraham, Jamestown, will be talk about Judaism at the Adult Forum.

Sunday, March 3rd, we will take a break from this series and the St. Luke's Search Committee will lead the Forum.

Wednesday Night Lenten Program

"One Source...Many Wells"

This Lent, join with others as we look at how our concept of God and the way we prefer to worship compares with others here at St. Luke's. During the Wednesdays in Lent, the Rev. Liz Simmons will lead us in "One Source...Many Wells?" using the book by Corinne Ware, "Discover Your Spiritual Type." We'll take a look at how our personality and views of God may make certain types of prayer and other spiritual practices a better fit individually. We will also look at our congregation's overall spiritual style. St. Luke's Search Committee plays an active role in these sessions and will lead the evening of March 13th.. This is a major opportunity for yout o have input for the search.

Rector Search Needs Your Help!

THE SEARCH COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP! Beginning Saturday, February 23, and continuing through Sunday, March 17, you'll receive a card printed with a question about our Parish and our next Rector when you come to weekend services. We'd like you to take a few minutes before or after the service (hopefully, not during the sermon) to jot down your answer to the "question of the day." Then, as you leave church you can drop your completed card in the baskets placed near each door. Your answer may be as brief and succinct as you wish; there are no "wrong" answers. This is only one of several opportunities you'll have to provide the Search Committee with your thoughts, dreams, and hopes for St. Luke's. We thank you in advance for your honest and prayerful responses.
