"Every time God forgives us,

God is saying that God's own rules do not matter as much as the relationship that God wants to create with us."               Richard Rohr

This last week was a tremendous experience for me. I had the opportunity to confer with other Episcopalians and discuss the past, present and future of formation in the context of the Church. It was a very enlightening week in the land of Enchantment, New Mexico. I have returned with a lot to think about as well as a renewed passion for our formation ministries here at St. Luke's.

We had the opportunity to converse with Father Richard Rohr, a Franciscan (Roman Catholic) priest and author. Father Rohr talked about the two halves of life as presented in his book "Falling Upward". The concepts were very applicable to how and why we do formation in the context of the church. His thoughts are there are two halves of life that all human beings find themselves, and that God calls us to the second half of life.

The first half of life is essentially learning the law. Through our growth as human beings we learn how to take control. We learn the difference between right and wrong. During this stage we are striving, performing, and achieving in order to succeed. He found that this stage is important, but can be rather ego-centric. This stage is characterized best by learning the Ten Commandments.

The second half of life is essentially defining the law. Father Rohr states this is the hardest stage to enter because it requires us to give control over to God. We move from fearing God as a judgmental authority figure, to a loving God as a parental figure. During this stage we are becoming the true self that God gives us. This stage is very soul-centric, and is best by the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount.

The conversations resulted in practical ideas for use in our own church family. Among those are things are:

  • Being more intentional about Parent - Family ministry, by setting up programs geared toward parents and families
  • Creating more ownership of our programs within the church that will support, assess, and help plan those programs.

Please begin to pray about and consider your part in this plan. If you would like to more information as to what I have envisioned, please come talk to me. I would love to share the excitement generated by the Forma Tapestry Conference I attended. Come find me!

ADULT FORMATION - 2013

"How can we sing TOGETHER the Lord's song?..."

Over the past few weeks, we have discussed "community" in the Adult Forum; what it is and what it might mean to us. We now transition to our Lenten series on world religions.   The Forum planning committee believes it is important to learn about other religions to be able to listen, communicate, and possibly live together "in community" better. Sunday, February 17, Jay Phillippi will present an activity he did with the diocese earlier this year. How much do you think you know - and how much do you really know about other religions? Come and find out! 9 am on the stage area.

There is a sign-up sheet in the Undercroft along with the "guidelines" for a supper. If you have any questions, please talk with Barbara Bumsted.

Wednesday Night Lenten Program - 2013

"One Source...Many Wells"

Everything is easier when done as a group, including self-examination. This Lent, join with others as we look at how our concept of God and the way we worship compares with others here at St. Luke's. During the Wednesdays in Lent, the Rev. Liz Simmons will lead a discussion on "What is Your Spiritual Type?" using the book by Corinne Ware Discover Your Spiritual Type, as well as other resources to look at how your personality and views of God may make certain types of prayer and other spiritual practices a better fit for you. On 5 Wednesday evenings beginning Feb. 20th we'll begin at 6:00 with worship in the Chapel, followed by a soup supper at 6:30 and the program at 7:15. Any questions, please talk with Barbara Bumsted or Madre Liz. Join in; this is an important time in our life as a church family.

Soup & Chili Fundraiser Cook-Off

February 24th supports St. Luke's Youth

EVERYONE is invited to make a pot of their best recipe for soup and/or chili and bring it in to compete! We'll judge the entries immediately following the 10am service; which means we'll enjoy a great lunch together!

WingedOx Players

  What is your gift?

That is the question Madre Liz asked us in her sermon at the Annual Meeting. We all have a gift to offer. The Winged Ox Players would like to ask you to consider what gift you have and how can you use it?

The Winged Ox Players is a drama group of St. Luke's that hopes to use the power of the play to reach out to our community and let everyone know that we have a great and welcoming church. Our hope is to include as many people as possible from our congregation. To seek out the many gifts that people have to offer.

We are very excited to announce the next two productions: March 16 & 17th we will present Freud's Last Session. Imagine if Sigmund Freud met with C.S. Lewis and they had a discussion about life, sex (of course) and religion. This play will make you think and laugh. Matt Smith plays Freud, and Miguel Covarrubias plays C.S. Lewis. Show times will be Saturday March 16th at 7pm, and Sunday the 17th at 12 noon in the undercroft. We'd like to plan a simple supper for Saturday night and a light brunch on Sunday with a discussion to follow the play. Tickets will be $10 and include dinner or brunch.

In April we hope to present C.S. Lewis' famous story, The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe. Auditions for this production will be announced in the coming weeks. This is truly a family show.

Putting on these two productions takes much work and we are looking for your gifts to help. Maybe your gift is not on the public stage - maybe it's making costumes, building sets, publicity, organizing basket raffles, running sound or lights, helping out backstage or selling tickets. As you can see there are so many opportunities. Perhaps you are not able to do any of those things, but remember, financial gifts are always gratefully accepted to support the work of the production. You can become an "Angel of the Theatre."

The group serves as an outreach ministry, and proceeds from the shows are donated to local charities. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, we were able to donate $300 to four different local charities during our last production of God's Favorite.

We hope that you will prayerfully consider using your gifts with the Winged Ox Players. Please contact, Deacon Pierce @ 969-7412, dpackfan@stny.rr.com
