Just what is this
'Passionate Spirituality' about,

anyway?

"Is there anyone here who contemplates the nature of reality and the cosmos?" the woman asked at the door of the church office this morning. "Always," I answered, a bit facetiously. "Then could I talk with you awhile?" she asked.

Well, no, I couldn't talk with her then, because the nature of reality -- for a parish priest, anyway -- includes newsletter articles, deadlines, and appointments, so I made an appointment for her to come back so we could have such a philosophic discussion.

I live for such conversations, is what I tell people who apologetically tell me they have questions about God and suffering and heaven and whatever else they are struggling with spirituality. There are no bad questions.

So, maybe you don't contemplate the nature of reality, or wonder if dogs go to heaven, as many have asked me. But hopefully, your faith extends beyond the doors of the church and worship and includes how you treat others, especially odd people, and how you make daily choices.

Daily choices and the treatment of others whom God draws into our lives is the beginning of "passionate spirituality", one of the eight qualities described by Natural Church Development as essential in a healthy church.

Unfortunately, for many of us, spirituality has the reputation for being navel gazing and sitting around passively and uselessly discussing the nature of reality and the cosmos. That's very rarely what it's about. For me, as someone who has worked the 12 steps for more than 28 years, it's the everyday nature of my faith, something for which the church hasn't always offered much help. One of the reasons I became a priest was because I thought this "everydayness" was something the church should do better.

So I will be bringing my own spiritual journey and practices and yes, passion, to the parish to help you catch fire and become a bit more passionate about how God has everything to do with every aspect of your life, and empowers you and even communicates with you in every minute. It has everything to do with being a mystic, and nothing to do with navels.

4th Street Cafe News

Joe Trusso recently passed away. Although he was not a member of our church, he was an active member of our Fourth Street Cafe and attended many of our special events.

Joe had an extraordinary gift of kindness. He touched so many lives with his gentleness, most recently when he read a New Year's Prayer to the people in the Cafe. I am confident that I join many others in saying that he will be greatly missed.

             Blessings to Joseph!

Each congregation is invited to read the book and discuss it.  The author will be in our diocese on Thursday, February 28 at the D-Center.

There are three children in the Honduras Mission Project that are in need of a sponsor. For $25.00 per month or $300.00 per year you can provide a child with food for their family, a Christian program on a weekly basis, a uniform so they can attend school, and other items necessary to their well-being. You also have the opportunity twice a year to take a short term mission trip and actually meet and interact with your child and their family. Please contact Shauna Anderson for more information at 716-664-0663.  Check the bulletin board in the stage area of the undercroft for pictures.
