Let Us Remember

Our Homeless Brothers and Sisters

For the majority of us, the cold weather is an annoyance. We have to put on more layers or clothes; we have to shovel our walks; some of us even have to walk our dogs where others have NOT shoveled their walks! When I find myself grousing over these inconveniences, I remember a story I heard recently from a Street Church email list to which I subscribe.

One of the pastors for a homeless ministry in a big city was asked by the local police to identify a man found dead in the bitter cold. No one had reported him missing; he was not in the criminal data base. But he HAD been someone who attended the Tuesday Bible study for the homeless held in the park. And he was known by this pastor and the other attenders of the street church held every week.

Because a few people had been willing to stand out in the cold, and welcome and commit to building a community, this man, Harold was known as the beloved child of God that he is, even if the world did not know him. There are street ministries all over the country, many of them run by Episcopalians, which go out to where the people are, and respond to many of their needs.

As we hurry in to our warm homes, cars and offices from the cold, let's remember those who aren't able to find shelter, as well as those who voluntarily give up their shelter to minister to them. If you are interested in getting email from the Street Ministry list, email me at liz.simmons@stlukesjamestown.org, and I will make sure you are added.

Join us at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft.

Next Sunday, January 20, the Forum will host its annual "Meet the Candidates!" session. This is the time that we get to talk with the folks who are running for Vestry, Warden, and for Diocesan Convention delegates.
