Commissioning the Search Committee

Update on Our Rector Search Process

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are on our way!

Our process of finding our next rector began as a five-member selection committee created by the vestry met several times to prayerfully discern proposed members for the Search Committee. At its meeting on Monday, December 10, 2012, the St. Luke's Vestry reviewed and voted to accept this Search Committee membership as proposed. During the 10 o'clock worship service on Sunday, January 6th, 2013, St. Luke's will officially commission the Search Committee, and our work will begin in earnest.

Search committee members are:

Karen Collins, Chair

Jackie Bennett       Mardell Johnson       Chip Ulrich

Janet Card               Jay McManus             Donna Vanstrom

Norma DeJoy         Patrick Monaghan     Catherine Way

Kurt Gustafson      Jay Phillippi                  Jay Yaggie

Paul Johnson, Warden (ex-officio)

Donna Phillippi, Warden (ex-officio)

The other warden, who will be elected at the Annual Meeting at the end of January, will also have the prerogative of serving on the Search Committee as an ex-officio (non-voting) member.

Throughout the search process, we will proceed with mentoring from The Very Rev. Canon Barbara Price, who is our diocesan Canon for Transitions Ministry. Canon Price will be joining us for our first meeting this month. We will then continue with working meetings, and plan to join the Vestry for its retreat in February, providing an opportunity to talk and pray about the search together.

Our first task will be the development of a Parish Profile, which provides an in-depth look at our church - our history, current mission and ministries, and our dreams for the future. We will need input from all parish members as we pull these ideas together, and there will be several different opportunities to be part of this process.

The overall timeline for our search process will probably be a year to a year-and-a-half. We are all eager to have our new rector in place; at the same time, we are committed to finding the right person for this position, and have faith that this will happen in God's time.

We will keep the parish posted on the search process on a regular basis. Meanwhile, what can you do?

*Watch for opportunities to be involved as we seek input from congregation members in creating the Parish Profile.

* Pray for the vestry in their leadership of the parish, pray for the search committee, pray for St. Luke's, and pray for our next rector, wherever he or she may be right now.

With many thanks for this opportunity to work together for our future,

Karen Collins

Search Committee Chair

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS

All Church School students will gather in the undercroft on Sunday, January 6th (2013) to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, which is a much bigger festival than Christmas in Latin American countries. Epiphany is when the wise men travel to visit Jesus as a child.

Remember we continue to have breakfast available for all our Sunday School kids from 8:50 to 9:10 a.m. in the undercroft.

This play is about Western New York by A. R. Gurney. The play is narrated by a young man, telling about events in his family, while he was still a young child, and how they have molded his adult self; the play features Bob Plyler as "Harvey," the narrator's father.

Proceeds support scholarships for aspiring young students of music and/or art in our area.

Tickets are $30 and available at the Jackson Center, and include a light supper and beverages.

If you are an adult, your presence is always welcome with our youth group as an indication to our young people that you care about their spiritual life and their presence in the church. Talk to Miguel Covarrubias our Youth minister, or Madre Liz, if you'd like to know more about volunteering with the youth program. Parents of youth members are also welcome ....let's talk!

Vestry Candidates Wanted --
St. Luke's is interested in recruiting a few good Episcopalians to volunteer their time, gifts and talent as part of our Vestry.
At the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 27, 2013, the members of St. Luke's will elect: one warden, three vestry members, and three delegates to diocesan convention.
Service on the Vestry presents an opportunity for anyone interested in a leadership role to work for the future of St. Luke's in a year of transition and change. This is the time to get involved!

How We Love During the Christmas Season

At this time of the year it seems easy for many of us to love one another in the traditional or typical way. Maybe we will send a card or hand a gift to someone who is accepting of us and that we accept.

As Christians sometimes it is not easy to love. We are asked to love not only those that love us back but those who do not. Sometimes it seems difficult to break the barriers we have erected towards others.

As Christians we are asked to take the risk and give ourselves in loving service to one another. What will happen this Christmas Season, if, you are surrounded by friends and enemies? Will you act boldly as a Christian and be inconvenienced to love and maybe be loved by someone who is not your friend? Will you mend a strained relationship with someone?

Please join me this Holiday season, as I will

concentrate on being more Christian like in loving others. Merry Christmas!

I would like to send a Warm Christmas, WELCOME, to The Reverend Elizabeth Huskey Simmons (Madre Liz), who recently met with vestry members to break bread.

Stay warm while you make wonderful memories this Christmas.
