Change is a Sign that the Holy Spirit is Present

Transitions can be hard, if we let them be. We have to say goodbye to people we have come to care about; we have to adjust to new people or leave behind familiar patterns; we have to CHANGE.
As people of faith, we can see change and transition from a more faithful perspective. Jesus told us, "Behold; I make all things new." (Revelation 21:1) And Paul reminds us that "if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: see, everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17)
It almost sounds as if the only thing we can count on in God is that everything will be made new! Change seems to be a sign that we are spiritually alive! Now, relax; take a breath. That may sound a little overwhelming, until you remember that every time God asks us to do something, God gives us the grace to do it.
In the coming months of transition, there will be changes. Already there's the change of having someone completely different at the altar and in the pulpit. Because I am a different person, I am probably not always going to do things the way Eric or Susan did them. And it's okay to grieve that, even as you grieve not having Emily and Margaret around, and not seeing the Williams' car when you pull into the parking lot. (Mine is the red one with the Wisconsin license plates.)
What I bring is 18 years of parish ministry, in a variety of settings: some very large parishes, a couple the size of St. Luke's, and one very small parish that is dying because they did not make important changes as the world around them changed. I will be drawing from all those experiences, and telling you those stories as we go, but I especially want to hear the story of how St. Luke's came to be what it is today. Because it's also important to realize that when we move into a new chapter, we take some of who we are right now with us. Let's be intentional about what those things are.

ADULT FORMATION - 2012

The Forum continues the Advent series of reflection and discussion. We have been having some great discussion. We are all struggling in how to deal with ALL that the season brings - especially our expectations and what we think others expect of us. Come focus on the "reason for the season." We will be using a booklet from Forward Movement entitled "Jesus, Beloved Son". The booklet follows the lectionary for Year C and bases the reflections on some of the writings of Henri Nouwen. (Booklets will be available to use during the session and for purchase for $1). The Forum begins at 9:00 am and is on the stage area of the undercroft.

'Tis the Season

What happens when the cast of a church's living Nativity scene is hauled off to jail because of a herd of uncooperative livestock? A down-on-his-luck Santa becomes the unsuspecting target for "good will toward men." St. Luke's Winged Ox Players presents this play at the 4 pm Family & Communion Service. Dress rehearsal is Sunday, Dec 23rd following the 10 am service!

Youth Christmas Celebration

St. Luke's Youth Christmas Party is December 19th, beginning at 6:30 pm! Madre Liz Simmons welcomes the group at the rectory (311 Crossman St.) to celebrate! Bring a "white elephant" gift and a snack to share! "White elephant" gifts are things that are fun, funny, not too expensive, and "re-gifting." Some ideas include: a can of soup wrapped up really pretty; a slinky; a pack of sharpies; a hula hoop ... Things not to bring: anything mean or gross, or anything you would not want someone opening in front of their grandmother.
