VOICE of St Luke's
November 25, 2012
|
Can I slow down my pace sufficiently to once again hear God?
| |
Ever feel like your soul needs to catch up with your body? Years ago, social commentators declared that technology would free up our time and our lives. We could work from home. We would no longer "waste time" on tedious and repetitious tasks. They anticipated a world of greater flexibility, improved productivity, shorter work weeks, and more free-time. Instead, we live at higher speed, with more instantaneous demands upon us, and with raised expectations.
Higher speeds require longer slows. If we're traveling at 90 miles per hour, an abrupt stop is not possible (nor advisable). But this I know-His voice will not compete with our noise. The richness of His Word in my life is found in seasons of soaking, not moments of shock. Our greatest creativity and peace emerge not by accident but from connection-with Him.
If we want to see Him-to "fix our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2)-it'll take some strategic changes for some of us. In some instances those changes will relate to technology. In other cases, it's a matter of time-management. In every instance, it will require us to slow down ; not just so that our souls can rejoin our bodies, but so that our hearts can rejoin Christ.
Check your speed.

ADULT FORMATION - 2012
| |
Sunday, November 25, the Forum will watch and discuss Bishop Franklin's DVD about the Diocesan budget and the new "full share" plan. Fr. Eric reported about the discussion and passing of the new plan at Diocesan Convention in October. This may sound a bit "dry" but it will give us an opportunity for more detail and to see how it affects St. Luke's. Join us for the Adult Forum on Sundays at 9:00 am, the stage area of the undercroft.
On Sunday, December 2, the Forum will begin an Advent series of reflection and discussion. The time leading up to Christmas is always chaotic, and the Forum is hoping to give folks a chance to "decompress". We will use a booklet from Forward Movement entitled "Jesus, Beloved Son". The booklet follows the lectionary for Year A (which begins on December 2!) and bases the reflections on some of the writings of Henri Nouwen.

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS
|
Sunday November 25th, church school classes will all meet in the undercroft for review and sum-up "How to Pray" as Jesus taught us by reciting the Lord's Prayer.
Beginning Sunday, Dec 2nd, our next rotation we will focus on Advent. We will make gifts to give to Jesus and talk about the Jesse Tree, the family tree of Jesus.
Also, kids and adults are welcome to continue to add any prayers to the prayer wall found at the "coffee bar" in the undercroft.

Tis the Season! ... for a play
| |
When the cast of a church's living Nativity scene is hauled off to jail because of a herd of uncooperative livestock, a down-on-his-luck Santa becomes the unsuspecting target for "goodwill toward men." The fast-paced script is a collage of humor and heart tugs, as well as the answer for any actor's wish for a play that provides strong character roles. A need for a personal relationship with God is at the heart of this Christmas play.
St. Luke's Winged Ox Players along with St. Luke's Youth is putting together our annual Christmas Eve pageant for the 4pm family service. Your help is needed! This year we are putting together an intergenerational play called "'Tis The Season".
There will be an Audition/Reading on Sunday Nov. 28th after the 10am service.
Cast: 6 male, 5 female, 1 boy, extras;
plus help with set and costuming

SHOPPER'S LUNCHEON 2012 ~
Thank you to all who helped make this year's luncheon a success. We had about 50 volunteers cooking, baking pies, cleaning, and serving, along with all those who contributed to our bake sale. A large donation of grapes, blueberries and other items helped to keep our cost down. We expect to be able to donate $3,000 to be used in our local community. Jack & Wilma Twinam, co-chairs
Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful party last Thursday and the amazing gifts. I loved the thoughtfulness and the humor that went into the celebration and I am still chuckling over the calendar girls. It was good to laugh and cry together and I was overwhelmed by your generosity, kindness and love. It was so good of the bishop to come, along with my clergy colleagues, and Susan and the girls really enjoyed the chance to reconnect with friends. We will truly miss you all.
--Fr. Eric
