VOICE of St Luke's

From St. Luke's Vestry

The Wardens and Vestry are pleased to announce that they have found an Interim Rector for St. Luke's!     Rev. Elizabeth ("Liz") Huskey Simmons presently is the Rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Racine, Wisconsin, where she has served since 2009. A priest for almost 17 years, Liz was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of East Carolina, and a priest in the Diocese of Western New York.  Before seminary at General Theological Seminary in New York, Liz worked for 4 years in the alcohol and drug treatment field in North and South Carolina. Prior to that, she worked as a newspaper reporter, having earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  A self-described "army brat," Liz was born in Tokyo, Japan and lived around the world and the US as a child before her family settled in North Carolina.  Her interests include her three dogs, eating out, golf, interfaith networking, contemplative prayer, and the emergent church.

Liz announced her departure and gave 30 days' notice to her parish yesterday. At present, Liz plans to move to Jamestown on Tuesday, December 4. Her first Sunday with us will be Sunday, December 9.

The Wardens and Vestry feel that Liz, together with her background and experience, will be a good fit for St. Luke's. We truly are as excited about Liz joining us as she is about serving here.

The Wednesday Group

The Wednesday Group of St. Luke's Group is an outreach to all senior members of our church, and the community, especially those who can't get to church on a regular basis. It is a great opportunity to see old friends, make new friends and share in the community of the church family with a worship service, lunch and a brief program. The Wednesday Group meets in the undercroft, which is wheelchair accessible. In November we'll meet on the 14th and this will be the last time for Fr. Eric to be with us. The program is Razz Rasmussen, a musician and music educator, along with a friend on the piano. Transportation to the Wednesday Group is provided by our church members. ADULT FORMATION - 2012

The election is now over and we have had our series on "Our Political Landscape". We mixed the two "subjects to avoid in public conversation"! The question of Church and State came up many times in the Forum planning meetings and was surely on many minds. The planning committee, therefore, decided to deal with the topic. Sunday, November 18, will be an exciting day in the Adult Forum with the promise of very dynamic discussion.

Dr. Danette Brickman, Chair of the Political Science Department at St. Bonaventure University will be here to discuss "The Separation of Church & State: What does the Constitution really say and what was inferred by our Founders?"

The following Sunday, November 25, the Forum will watch Bishop Franklin's DVD about the Diocesan budget and the new "full share" plan. Fr. Eric reported about the discussion and passing of the new plan at Diocesan Convention in October. This will give us an opportunity for more detail.

Fictional Friends Book Group

Our next Fictional Friends' book is

"The Tiger's Wife" by Tea Obreht.

We'll meet Monday, November 19th at 7 pm in the church library to discuss. You are welcome to join in even if you've not had a chance to read the book but are interested in the book group!

Three Marys Bible Study - Nov 26th

The Three Marys Bible Study: Role Models for Women Who Seek the Love of Jesus

meets again on Monday, November 26th at 7pm on the stage area in the undercroft.

Even if you've not been able to attend previously, all women are welcome to join in this talk.

Call Kim at the church office 483-6405 to receive a copy of the materials for discussion.

Episcopal Relief & Development

Parish Representatives Sought for

Episcopal Relief & Development

Episcopal Relief & Development Parish Representatives are sought for every church in our Diocese.  Parish Representatives provide information on Episcopal Relief and Development to people in the pews.  This is not a fundraising position. Representatives receive regular information about Episcopal Relief & Development programs and responses to emergencies or disasters, then get the information out to the members of the congregation through church bulletins, newsletters or other resources.   Contact The Rev. Deacon Rocky Dworak if you are interested or want more information at deaconrocky@gmail.com or St. Luke's Church office.
