Bach's Magnificat
Friday, November 16 at 8 PM

On Friday, November 16 at 8:00 pm you are invited to a marvelous concert at St. Luke's. The highlight of the concert will be a performance of the famous Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach.  The choir has worked very hard to learn this challenging piece and is really excited to share it with the parish and community.  Our director of music, Andy Schmidt, will conduct the St. Luke's Festival Choir, a group which encompasses both our regular parish choir and a variety of additional singers from the greater Jamestown community.  The concert also will feature the St. Luke's Chamber Orchestra, an eight-member group which will include Margaret Williams serving as concert mistress, and our former director of music, Ron McEntire, serving as organist.  Vocal soloists will include Jim Beal, Peter Bumsted, Gail Grundstrom, Leslie Hallock, Victoria McIlvain, Catherine Way, and Ruth Yancey-Walton.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) is widely recognized as one of the greatest composers of the baroque era and, indeed, of all time.   His musical output was vast and varied, with a strong emphasis on vocal music for the church.  Musicologist Donald Jay Grout has correctly stated that Magnificat occupies a unique place among Bach's vocal music in that it is "one of his most melodious works, more Italian in style than most of his church music." About 35 minues in duration, Bach's Magnificat is a supremely glorious piece for chorus, soloists, and orchestra.

Additional highlights in the concert will be a violin/cello duet performed by Margaret Williams and Bryan Eckenrode and an organ solo performed by Andy Schmidt.

Admission is free. An offering will be taken to benefit music ministries at St. Luke's. Please invite your friends to this wonderful evening of music and support our wonderful musicians.

Shoppers' Luncheon & Bake Sale -
A Jamestown Tradition
One of the great traditions of St. Luke's and for downtown Jamestown is the Annual Shoppers' Luncheon & Bake Sale held on the second Friday of November, this year on November 9th.

This event includes the sale of BAKED GOODS, RADA cutlery and brooms, but what brings people back year after year is the delicious homemade Chicken a la King dinner and homemade pies. This meal sends us back in time to the age of slow-cooked food made entirely from scratch.

How can you help? There is set-up and clean-up; there is chicken and vegetable preparation, and of course, baking for the Bake Sale! Any help you can offer is welcome, speak to Wilma Twinam or give her a call ... 640-3646.
Tickets for the luncheon are available from the many members of the Bishop Overs Guild and also at the church office. Tickets are $7.00 for adults; $3.00 for children under 12.

Take-out luncheons are also available. Take-outs must be ordered and paid for by, Thursday, Nov 8th; call the church office 483-6405.

Veterans' Day Service - Nov 11th

Another Tradition of St. Luke's Church is the Veterans' Day Service, Sunday, November 11, 2012

11:11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. flag

For over 50 years St. Luke's has hosted the Veterans' Day service, and this year, immediately following our regular 10 am worship, members of the local Veterans' organizations make will their way from the intersection at 3rd Street to St. Luke's.

All members of our parish family are encouraged and welcome to remain in the sanctuary for the prayer service which follows.

Diocesan Convention Re-Cap

This past weekend the Diocese of Western New York held its 175th annual convention in Chautauqua County at the Chautauqua Suites in Mayville.  St. Luke's was represented by our clergy, Eric and Cathy, and our lay delegates, Donna Phillippi, Matt Smith and Catherine Way. Last year the focus of the convention was the bishop's vision for our diocese.

This year the focus was on how we fund that mission.  In addition to the regular business of adopting a budget and electing people for diocesan committees, there was a proposal to substantially change the Fair Share system by which congregations support the diocese.  Currently, the diocese creates a budget and then tells each congregation what its "fair share" of the pie is, based on a three year average of each congregation's operating revenue.  However, it is a voluntary system, so each congregation can pledge whatever amount they choose.   Some pay the full fair share, some go the extra mile, but some (for a variety of reasons) pay much less than the asking.  At this convention we adopted a new system, which will be in effect beginning with the 2014 budget.  This new system was based on ideas put forth at the deanery meetings last winter.  The new "Full Share" system makes several key changes:  It starts with congregational income, not the diocesan budget.

  1. Each congregation will now be asked to give 13% of their operating revenue, rather than a sliding scale.
    1. The first 10% is a mandatory tithe.   If a congregation cannot pay all of the tithe, they can go to an appeals committee to plead their case.
    2. The next 3% is a voluntary offering.  If a congregation cannot pay all of the offering, they can submit a letter to the Barnabas committee and explain why they cannot pay the amount, how they are contributing to the life of the diocese, and what plans they have to try to reach that amount.

We also passed a resolution to adopt the Five Marks of Mission which were presented at the General Convention.  These are widely used throughout the Anglican Communion as a clear and compelling vision for our life and ministry.  Each congregation and church member are encouraged to adopt them in their own lives and ministry.  They are:

  1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
  2. To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
  3. To respond to human need by loving service
  4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society
  5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth

ANNUAL MEETING - Jan 2013

We're looking for a few good Episcopalians . . .

at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 27, 2013, the members of St. Luke's will elect: one warden, three vestry members, and three delegates to diocesan convention. All candidates should be adult communicants in good standing, meaning that they should be baptized or confirmed members who are faithful in attending worship and in "working, praying and giving for the spread of the kingdom."

Service as Warden or on Vestry presents an opportunity for anyone interested in a leadership role to work for the future of St. Luke's in a year of transition and change. This is the time to get involved!  To nominate yourself or someone else for any of these positions, contact Paul Johnson by phone at (716) 487-2192, or by email at usa_pojk@hotmail.com
