Follow-up on NCD Review
(Natural Church Development
| |
On Tuesday, October 16, Fr. Eric held an open gathering to go into further detail regarding the NCD results, to review where we are, and to discuss what we might like to see happen. The hope is that the fruits of this discussion can be used by the Profile Committee and the Search Committee as we enter and go through our transition period.
Fr. Eric reviewed again the concept of NCD (Natural Church Development) and our results from the last survey as well as showing the comparison to the previous three surveys. We are very pleased to report that our average as a parish is now "above average"! (We really have come a long way...but yes, there is room for improvement.) We also reviewed and discussed our current mission and vision statements, concluding that all is summed up in the phrase "drawing closer to God." It was suggested that through our transition and as we put in writing who we are, what we are about, and where God wants us to go, we will most likely want to revisit both the mission and vision statement and look at ... changing them!
As the group drilled down into the eight characteristics of a growing church - the same eight over the past five to six years - once again, our lowest are Passionate Spirituality and Need-oriented Evangelism. We understand that most of us are pleased with the way St. Luke's is providing worship and opportunities for spiritual growth, and that we are strong spiritually as a group, but our individual journeys and comfort with discussing that is still viewed as being low. We are pleased with what has been offered and know that we just have to keep trying and at the same time be aware of what people need.
Need-oriented evangelism has seen a wonderful increase (and we have actually increased in ALL areas - just some more than others) with the continued success of the 4th Street Café and that we do care and pray for one another. We are, however, extremely squeamish about sharing our faith - and perhaps not even sure where we are with our faith. We know that we, again, need to keep offering opportunities and to continue to nurture community and compassion.
Empowering Leadership, Holistic Small Groups, Inspiring Worship Service, Loving Relationships, Gift-based Ministry, and Effective Structures continue to be our strengths and we have seen a few grow exponentially. Using our strengths to "bring up" our weaknesses will be an ongoing focus. St. Luke's has grown in many ways, thanks to God's grace and our all wanting to "draw closer to God". If you have any comments or concerns, please be sure to share them with Fr. Eric or either of our Wardens, Donna Phillippi and Paul Johnson.

TRANSITION UPDATE:
| |
As we prepare to say farewell to Father Eric, the vestry and wardens are moving ahead with plans for the transition to new leadership. Rev. Barbara Price, the Diocesan Transitions Officer, is in the process of finding candidates for Interim Rector. A selection committee has been formed for the purpose of recruiting and establishing a Search/Profile Committee, who will then find our new rector! The selection committee is composed of wardens Paul Johnson and Donna Phillippi, vestry members Linda Dawson and Cilla Menzies and Search Committee Chair Karen Collins. If you are interested in serving as a member of the Search or Profile Committees, please speak to one of these people. Please bear in mind that the search process can be lengthy and time-consuming. Please give a lot of prayerful thought whether you are willing to make this commitment. And please pray for our parish as we move through this sometimes unsettling journey!

The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13 9.)
"Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'
Check out the kids' "Prayer Wall" in front of the coffee bar in the undercroft - and add your own prayers to theirs!

Friday, November 16 you are invited to a marvelous free concert at St. Luke's. The highlight of the concert will be a performance of Bach's famous MAGNIFICAT.
