VOICE of St Luke's
October 14, 2012 |
|
| |
St. Luke, our patron saint, is mentioned by Paul as a fellow worker in several of his letters and in Colossians notably as "the beloved physician." In the Gospel attributed to St. Luke, there are more healing miracles than in any of the other Gospels. Many hospitals around the world have been named for St. Luke as a result, as is the Order of St. Luke, an ecumenical healing ministry.
For the past several years we have honored St. Luke on the Sunday nearest his feast day (October 18) by featuring the sacrament of healing at the 10:00 am service. This year on Sunday, October 21, we will offer the laying on of hands and anointing at two stations, the altar and the usual station by the elevator.
The sacrament of healing is one of the five minor sacraments. The outward and visible sign is the laying on of hands and anointing with oil specially blessed by the bishop for this purpose. The inward and spiritual grace is healing in body, mind and spirit. This healing may take the form of a miraculous physical change. More often, and more importantly, the healing that God gives is spiritual--forgiveness of sins, reconciliation between estranged family members, the ability to let go of old resentments and fears. Healing opens a channel that allows God's grace to flow more readily, to fill us more completely. It unlocks the peace and joy that God wants us to experience.
Perhaps you have been uncertain or apprehensive about coming forward for healing in the past. Let me assure you there is nothing weird or scary about this sacrament. There is also nothing selfish about asking God for what we need. He wants and expects us to do that.
If you prefer a more intimate setting for healing, I also invite you to join us every Thursday at 12:05 pm for a brief communion service which also includes the sacrament of healing. As a bonus, that service includes a delicious light lunch as well.
--Fr. Eric |

The Lord's Prayer (New American Standard Bible (NASB) Matthew 6:9-13 ~ 9.) "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10.) 'Your kingdom come. (3) Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11.) 'Give us this day our daily bread. 12.) 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13.) 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'

ADULT FORMATION - 2012 | |
"Our Political Landscape - Part III"
Our nation, as well as much of the world, is deeply divided. There are more questions than answers...
October 14 will feature our Assemblyman, Andy Goodell, who will talk to us about the landscape on the state level, and how the presidential election might affect the state - looking at both possible outcomes.
"Our Political Landscape - Part IV"
On Sunday, October 21, we take a "break" from elected officials (!) and will talk about healthcare and how it might be affected by the upcoming presidential election - and how who is in "power" in the State Senate and Assembly may also affect healthcare. Betsy Wright, President/CEO of WCA Hospital will join us for this discussion. Many issues(Medicare, Medicaid, health insurance in general) hang in the balance.
Come to the Forum with your thoughts and questions.
As always, the Forum meets at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft. |

Natural Church Development Review | |
All are invited Tuesday, October 16 at 7:00 pm to hear about the results of our most recent NCD survey. We will look a little more deeply at the results of the NCD report and talk together about the directions we would like to see St. Luke's take over the next couple of years. The information gathered at this meeting will be shared with the profile committee as they work in the coming months on a profile of the parish as part of the search process.

Budget Report | |
This past spring St. Luke's was projecting a potential deficit in 2013. Fr. Eric and treasurer, Catherine Way, will bring us an update on how we are doing financially as we enter the fourth quarter of 2012 and what our initial projections are for 2013. Please plan to attend a brief meeting right after the 10 am service on Sunday, October 21. We'll meet right in church.
