New Focus on Health
A Health Outreach Task Force was formed at the June 19th Board Meeting for the purpose of exploring options to provide health screenings.
The plan is to promote the importance of primary and preventive medical and dental care and access to a medical "home." A minimum of six full days of medical and dental screenings will identify individuals in need of follow-up medical and dental appointments.
The Task Force has developed a two pronged approach that includes recommendations addressing corporate locations, particularly those companies that utilize a workforce without provision of medical insurance benefits, as well as a plan targeting underserved populations that demonstrate poor self care by not seeing a medical provider on a regular basis and who may not view preventive care as essential.
For more information or if you would like to get more involved, please contact Gloria Aftanski gaftanski@uwcj.org or calling 732 247-3727.

The Central Jersey Family Health Consortium recognized home visitors from two UWCJ Programs: Nurse-Family Partnership and Parent-Child Home Program. From their Certificate of Appreciation: In recognition of your contribution to successfully advocating, educating and providing support to women and families throughout Middlesex and Somerset Counties.
Dr. Pai, from the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, spoke about the racial disparity in Community Health Care and how home visitors make a difference. For example, home visitors can reach under-served populations and provide education to help their clients to set goals, learn about good nutrition practice and break down communication barriers. One result is that the risk is lower that medications could be misused.
For more information about how the Nurse-Family Partnership and Parent-Child Home Program improve the community, please contact Gloria Aftanski at gaftanski@uwcj.org.

Gifts of the Season

Year round, United Way of Central Jersey assists families in need residing within our service area of Middlesex County. Our Gifts of the Season
Program is designed to provide food, clothing, toys and gifts to families for the end-of-year holidays. United Way invites you to join area businesses and Middlesex County Labor Unions to help families in need.
Our non-profit agency partners provide information about specific families receiving services from them that are in need of additional assistance with basic necessities in order to preserve their independence and stability.
The Gifts of the Season Program provides anonymous information to participating donors about the family. Each family member is asked to complete a wish list, with no one gift costing in excess of $35.00. United Way will supply you with this list only as a suggestion. Personal care items such as shampoo, cologne, scented soaps, etc., are also welcome. We also ask that gifts be wrapped and labeled for easier distribution. If you would like to make a cash donation to this program, please make checks payable to United Way of Central Jersey as a donation to the Gifts of the Season Program, and we will shop for you.
Thank you. Call Patricia Desiderio at 732 247-3727 to learn how you can help.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
A grant has been received from the IRS to support UWCJ's initiative to increase financial stability among low-income households. In 2014, UWCJ helped to generate approximately $1.5MM for low-income tax payers. Those funds will be spent in our community for basic needs like food, utilities, rent, etc. The 2015 goal is to help prepare taxes for over 2,000 Central Jersey residents.
Training for volunteers is underway. 34 volunteers have returned from the last tax season, and the goal is to recruit and train more in order to start the season with 75 IRS-certified volunteers in total. Online training is available: click http://bit.ly/1GgVfY3
If you know someone who would like to have the pleasure of helping lower income tax payers, please contact Charmaine Rodriguez at crodriguez@uwcj.org. There are several different ways you can be part of the initiative - not just preparing tax returns.

Abriendo Puertas Training
Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors is a peer-to-peer training program that seeks to improve the outcomes of our nation's Latino children by focusing on building the capacity and confidence of parents to be strong and powerful advocates in the lives of their children.

UWCJ organized a training session at the Mary E. Gates Learning Center at United Way Worldwide's HQ in Alexandria, VA. United Ways from across the country gathered to learn how to implement Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors.
Opening Doors is the nation's first evidence-based, comprehensive training program developed by and for Latino parents.
UWCJ plans to implement the program in Central Jersey. If you have any questions or would like more information about this initiative, please contact Gloria Aftanski at gaftanski@uwcj.org.
