Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund
United Way has established this Fund to provide support for victims of this devastating storm. 100% of every donation will be used to provide emergency supplies, clothing and other needed items for Central Jersey residents affected by this disaster. State Authorities ask that individuals make financial contributions rather than donations of small quantities of food and goods because of storage and distribution problems.
To donate click here, or send a check, marked "Sandy Relief Fund," to Gloria Aftanski, President, United Way of Central Jersey 32 Ford Avenue Milltown, NJ 08850.
To donate by credit card, call Patricia Desiderio at 732 247-3727.
Thank you for supporting families in Central Jersey.

Community Conversations Report
UWCJ continues to engage diverse populations in "Community Conversations" to hear their views regarding community needs and the role of education to meet those needs. At recent meetings with Central Jersey residents, we heard the following:
What kind of community do people want?
A place where people are engaged and supportive, and it's inclusive and transparent. There need to be ways to come together and learn about each other - to deal with changing demographics, ethnic and religious make up.
Given these aspirations for the community, what do we want education to be like in this community?
Schools can engage parents and bring people together. Activities need to be available during non-work hours for people who work. Create a center that attracts people to get involved.
How will that help us to get the kind of community we want?
Schools can help teach values beyond core curriculum, e.g., social responsibility, civic engagement, volunteering, etc.

Volunteers in Action
Bags of Food for Children
| |
The Central Jersey community mobilized into action to provide packets of food for the weekend to children identified by school administrators who are experiencing or are in danger of food insecurity. 1,000 bags were assembled by volunteers on October 27th, "Make a Difference Day," in partnership with The Home News Tribune. The snacks are wholesome and non-perishable and consist of child-family items.
The cost of providing weekend food packets is $196 per student ($6/week). This program can be expanded to more children at more schools if the community decides to respond to the need. There are over 18,000 children living in poverty in Central Jersey. Please call Patricia Desiderio at 732 247-3727 for a list of food items needed and to learn about volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers Needed to Make Investment Decisions
| |
Volunteers are needed to participate in the community investment process. Working closely with other team members, volunteers will read program proposals and meet with non-profit agency officials in order to assist the United Way in making funding decisions.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to conduct site visits, as their schedules permit, to gain a fuller understanding of the programs, increase their knowledge of the needs of the community, observe if services are provided as described in applications, and ensure that clients receive quality services.
Volunteers will help set priorities for the need for services and directly participate in the process of making critical funding recommendations. Importantly, Community Investment volunteers will become aware of the most critical needs in our community and be able to advocate for policy and services to meet the education, income and health needs of those who live and work in Central Jersey.
Please contact June Launay for more information: 732 247-3727 or jlaunay@uwcj.org

Thank you to E&Y
for School Supplies
All the first and second graders in Carteret elementary schools were given backpacks including school supplies thanks to the generosity of Ernst & Young LLC.
This phenomenal achievement helps underscore the focus on boosting early grade reading in Carteret.
By providing these school supplies and other supports, UWCJ and its partners will drive improvements in reading that will enable these young students to thrive later in their school careers. | |

School Supplies | |
United Way contacts all the schools in the Central Jersey area to identify their needs for school supplies to help children who qualify for free lunch. Typically, administrators or teachers from each school come by the United Way's office at 32 Ford Avenue in Milltown to collect as much as we are able to provide depending on what is donated and the participating schools' needs.
