Women in Saudi Arabia, 2011: A Personal Story of Two Worlds Meeting
Thursday, June 16, 2011, 1:30-3:00 pm
Reserve a place
What is daily life like for Arab women of today? How does a western woman run workshops on leadership for university women who are not permitted to create their own course materials or even to show their faces in public? Over the past two years, Philippa Kelly has been working with Arab university professors in Riyadh, Abha City, and Najran. She has also recently been asked to collaborate with a female Saudi co-author to advise the Saudi Ministry on the position of women in Saudi Arabian universities. The experience has profoundly affected all involved, and much commonality has been found - personally as well as professionally - within a world of difference.
Philippa Kelly, resident dramaturg for the California Shakespeare Theater, trained as a Shakespeare scholar and has been awarded numerous scholarships and fellowships. She has published 35 articles and seven books, and teaches regularly in Australia, North America, and the Middle East.

Annual Fund Update
| Thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2010-11 Annual Fund; we have raised over $48,000 so far. The much-needed funds will help us continue to grow our program here in Berkeley. If you have not yet donated, we are happy to accept donations to the 2010-11 Annual Fund through the end of June. Donations received beginning in July will be applied to the 2011-12 Annual Fund.

Thanks to 2010-11 Volunteers!
|
Thank you to everyone who volunteered in 2010-11! We had members working on outreach efforts which included the Solano Stroll (Coordinator: Tom Fratar), Cal Day (Co-coordinators: Bill McLean and Jane Ellison), Homecoming, the KQED Radio Pledge Drive (Coordinator: Ron Tauber), the holiday party, and the lectures at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center (Coordinator: Nikki Maziasz). We also had new and returning members as class assistants doing smooth check-ins for each class. Thank you also to the members of our three standing committees: Annual Fund (Co-chairs Mark Medress and Wendy Willrich), Curriculum (Co-chairs Ann Peden and Lucille Poskanzer), and Membership (Chair Ron Tauber). A special thanks to our volunteer coordinator, Nikki Maziasz.

The Lunch Bunch

La Rose Bistro
2037 Shattuck Avenue, near Addison
510.644.1913
Although it is a bit more expensive than most of the other nearby lunch places, this is a wonderful choice for a delicious treat that's worth every penny. Blissfully quiet, with unobtrusive and warm service, the food is California French and the portions are generous. The bread, with a cilantro flavored dip that greets each guest, is terrific. Especially good also are the soups and creative salads. It's a white tablecloth and napkins place, so take your time and enjoy the experience. Closed for Monday lunch, though.
