Faculty Profiles: Dariush Zahedi and Linda Rugg
Dariush Zahedi, Lecturer, Political Science, UC Berkeley

The January 2011 OLLI Outlook featured Dariush Zahedi, lecturer in Political Science at UC Berkeley. This summer at OLLI, he will be teaching "Revolutionary Movements in the Middle East and North Africa."

Born in Tehran, Iran, Dariush Zahedi came to the United States in 1980 at the age of 13 and now has dual American-Iranian citizenship. He is currently a lecturer in political science at UC Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Southern California in 1998 and was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Read the full interview.

Linda Rugg, Associate Professor of Scandinavian at UC Berkeley

The January 2010 OLLI Outlook featured Linda Rugg, Associate Professor of Scandinavian at UC Berkeley. This summer at OLLI, she will be teaching a cultural study of whiteness titled "Hyperwhite and the Color Line: The Establishment and Policing of the Bounds of Whiteness in American Culture."

Wild Strawberries, Virgin Spring, The Seventh Seal. For many people of a certain age these titles evoke memories of youth and nights spent in a dark theater, soaking up romantic images of mysterious places and times. Ingmar Bergman's movies were all the rage in the late 50s and 60s, when seeing them bestowed a glint of sophistication and worldliness. Read the full interview.

OLLI Annual Fund

All Spring term students will be receiving a letter from the Annual Fund Committee at their classes this coming week. We encourage you to show your support by giving to the OLLI @Berkeley Annual Fund. Meeting our goal of $75,000 will help OLLI keep dues and fees at its 2007 level for another. The Annual Fund also supports the rental of Freight and Salvage, which we hope you love as much as we do. If you aren't taking a course this spring, we hope you will return soon. In the meantime, consider giving as an investment in OLLI's future!

The Lunch Bunch

by Lucille Poskanzer

Turkish Kitchen
1986 Shattuck Ave (just north of University Ave), Berkeley
510.540.9997

This is a very informal storefront restaurant with a wide variety of moderately-priced pretty good Turkish food as well as friendly service. However, the real deal is the current take away offer of a delicious and filling choice of a freshly-made warm sandwich, drink, and fries--all for $6! Or, if you want to forego the fries and drinks, the sandwich, big enough to share, will set you back all of $5. The lamb and beef gyro sandwich is my favorite.

Now that the weather is finally beautiful, grab a sandwich, find a place in the sun, and enjoy--or come on over to the OLLI lunch at the Freight and Salvage and share in the conversation.
