RJ opened The Solano Avenue Computer School, a private computer school catering to the non-technical students needing to increase their computer application knowledge and education. She has worked with a wide range of students, including older learners and career-changers, and has also taught college-level office technology courses. Faculty Profile: Chloe Veltman
by George Hersh

Chloe Veltman is a San Francisco-based arts journalist, broadcaster, and musician. For the Fall OLLI @Berkeley program she is teaching "Composers Now: New Music for the 21st Century."

How did you prepare for your first OLLI class?
I had my first OLLI experience as a guest speaker, presenting on counter-tenors for Jason Serinus's vocal music course. I liked the experience of a mature audience interested in music.

For my course this session, I planned in conjunction with the Berkeley Symphony and Cal Performances. Their schedules and availability set much of the program. Our first guest, composer John Adams, was familiar to me both through his music and his autobiography, Hallelujah Junction: Composing an American Life.

Tell us about your radio program, Voice Box.
Voice Box is a celebration of all aspects of vocal music. It is broadcast on KALW, 91.7 FM on Fridays from 10:00-11:00 pm. Recordings of past programs are posted on my blog, lies like truth (http://blog.chloeveltman.com/).

I'm working with song and singing in a non-traditional way, interviewing local artists, composers, voice therapists, and coaches, crossing boundaries, exploring the full range of genres and styles. I do my own fundraising for the show, so I am free to move from one aspect of vocal music to another as opportunities present.

What is the place of dance and of vocal and instrumental performance music in your personal life?
I play the oboe in a variety of Bay Area chamber music groups and orchestras. I sing with the 32-member International Orange vocal ensemble and the a cappella vocal quintet, Full Fathom Five. And I take regular dance classes and Vinyasa yoga sessions. Music isn't all of my life, but it contributes to almost everything I do these days.

"Composers Now: New Music for the 21st Century (Part 2)" with Chloe Veltman will be offered in the Winter 2011 term.

Located just across the street from the David Brower Center, this place has to be seen to be believed. The décor is a combination of bubble gum pink and silver glitter dining booths, swiveling red counter stools, ringed Saturn lighting fixtures, and music of the 60s and 70s. Oh, yes, the food--it's totally vegetarian, primarily organic, and a little pricey for what you get. It's essentially diner food for those people who won't go to a real diner. It's not upscale gourmet, but their Fakin' Bacon actually tastes good. Service is young and friendly.

(Re)discovering America: The Vinland Sagas and the Idea of a New Land
Saturday, October 9, 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall, UC Berkeley

During the 13th century, Icelanders wrote down tales that their ancestors had passed down about a series of voyages that took place around the year 1000--nearly 500 years before Columbus's famous voyage of discovery in 1492. These stories detail the first-recorded encounters between Europeans and the people inhabiting what we call North America, and the Icelanders called Vinland. Learn about the Vinland Sagas, examining them for their style, historical value, and reception by scholars, nay-sayers, adventurers, filmmakers, and enthusiasts. Sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Berkeley (OLLI @Berkeley).

THE DNA AGE: PERSONAL STORIES FROM THE GENETIC FRONTIER
Monday, October 11, 2010, 7:30 p.m.
Wheeler Auditorium.
Free and open to everyone on a first-come, first-seated basis

The panel will seek to shed light on the challenges new genetic information poses for all of us by exploring the personal stories of people who are grappling directly with its benefits and burdens. Moderated by New York Times National Correspondent Amy Harmon, the panel features three individuals she wrote about in her Pulitzer Prize-winning series, "The DNA Age." How do you face the future as a 22-year-old when you know you carry a gene for an incurable illness that will almost certainly strike in middle age? What do you do at age 33 when you find out you can eliminate your high genetic cancer risk -- but only by undergoing surgery that can be physically and psychologically arduous? Where do you go when a test pinpoints the genetic cause of your child's developmental differences, but offers little information about how to address them? How do family members respond to knowledge that may change their perception of themselves and each other? These are some of the questions that will be asked and answered as the panelists tell their tales. A doctor who uses genetic tests in his practice will add his medical expertise. Please bring your own questions about both gene testing and journalism.

LUNCH POEMS WITH WRITER AND OLLI INSTRUCTOR ZACK ROGOW
Monday, October 25, 2010, 7:00 p.m.
Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler Hall, UC Berkeley
Free

Lunch Poems invites you to a dramatic reading of a new play based on the poetry and life of Nazim Hikmet, Turkey's greatest modern poet. Entitled Things I Didn't Know I Loved, the play is by Zack Rogow, cofounder of Lunch Poems. The event will be introduced by Professor Robert Hass and directed by Barbara Oliver, who founded the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley. The reading will feature four of the Bay Area's top actors.

Things I Didn't Know I Loved follows Nazim Hikmet's legendary life, from his youth as an idealistic activist in the early days of the Russian Revolution, to his years spent in prison in Turkey for his political views, to his final decade in the Soviet Union. The story is tightly interwoven with Nazim Hikmet's greatest poems, beautifully translated by Randy Blasing and Mutlu Konuk.
