Special Offer: All-inclusive Membership
The Membership Committee would like to encourage more people to take multiple courses, to build the base of our ongoing lifelong learning community, and to be sensitive to the obstacles that might have kept people from choosing to be an All-inclusive member in August/September (when the economy was at its worst).

We are making a one-time offer to become an All-inclusive member for the remainder of 2009-10 for $500 (potential savings of $150).

It includes membership for the remainder of this year and 3 courses per term for the Winter and Spring.

From the OLLI Office
Introducing Satya Levine As you may know, Gerard Alcantara will not be here for the next three months and in his place we have hired Satya Levine who has a talent for words, websites, and general registration matters.

Brochures will be mailed out on December 9, if you don't receive one by December 18, contact the office. The PDF version of the brochure will be on our website early next week.

Tell One Friend (or your association or neighborhood group). Over the holidays, please let others know about OLLI @Berkeley. Our website has links for materials that can help you share OLLI, from course flyers to the short video, "For the Joy of It," made by OLLI members. Look for the OLLI ad on the inside back cover of the January issue of The Monthly.

OLLI @Berkeley/New York Times Collaborative Course "The Energy Challenge: Balancing Resources and Policies" will launch on February 16 and run for six weeks. It is a synchronous course that will post a new lecture each week along with a  live chat with speakers and participants. This course has been designed for people who want to have an overall sense of what the key issues are and what can be done.

The course will be offered again in the spring with updated material and in the summer.

OLLI Student ID Cards for All-inclusive and Annual Members New cards will be issued for All-inclusive and Annual members. They will be available starting at the Open House on January 12, 2010, and includes lamination after the card has been signed.

The next OLLI Outlook will be sent on January 8, 2010.

Annual Fund Update
Dear OLLI members,

After formally kicking off our Annual Fund campaign for 2009-10 only a month ago, we have encouraging news. First, the Osher Foundation has confirmed they will be giving us our first $1 million dollar endowment. While this will provide future stability for OLLI @Berkeley, it will only earn about half the amount we have been getting as a yearly grant from the Osher Foundation up to now. The Annual Fund drive is aimed, in part, to fill this gap.

Second, we have already received donations of over $13,000 from about 10% [76 out of 750?] of our membership (Aileen, can you fill this in). As you probably remember, we are striving for 100% member participation to reach a total goal of $75,000. Since we have a one-for-two matching pledge from the Annual Fund Committee, we will reach this goal by raising $50,000 from our general membership. We're off to a very good start, and thank all of you who have contributed so far.

There's still time to make a tax-deductible donation before December 31 and help maintain our Annual Fund momentum. A successful campaign will enable OLLI to serve you better without having to raise fees, by continuing to offer a wide range of courses, and keep Tuesday and Wednesday lecture courses at the Brower Center. And participation in the Annual Fund by all our members, at whatever each of us can manage, sends a strong message of commitment to the Osher Foundation and the University.

You can donate on-line, by mail, or through the OLLI office, where you can also arrange to make your contribution in several payments, if that is helpful.

Once again, a sincere thanks to all of you who have already participated, and best wishes to everyone for a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year.

Do you need a quick, good, and inexpensive place for lunch as you dash between classes, lectures, and meetings? This closet-sized storefront is just across the street from the David Brower Center. It offers low-priced sandwiches, soups and chili, salads, and wraps. It's one of the only places in Berkeley that has stuffed baked potatoes--don't knock it until you've tried the yummy $5 cheddar, broccoli, and sour cream! The hot sandwiches are terrific also. Best of all, you can stop in or call in before classes begin and leave your order, and it will be ready when you are--no fuss, no muss. There's a small, usually quiet outdoor patio, too.

Give the Gift of Learning
Do you know someone who would benefit from being an OLLI member but
needs one more incentive?  How about a gift certificate that would be redeemable
for membership dues or a course.  The office has holiday gift certificates available.

Contact the OLLI office at 510.642.9934.

Just published: The Widow's Husband
Tamim Ansary, who will be teaching "Conspiracy Theory in History, Politics, and Society" in the upcoming term, has recently published a historical novel this year. His book Destiny Disrupted (a non-fiction work) was "seeded" by an OLLI course he taught in 2006-07.

Happy Holidays!
