TIPS & TOOLS:  Headings Determine Engagement

If the heading (or sub-heading) of your web page, ad, blog, etc. doesn't "grab" your reader's attention, the rest of your hard work (the actual copy) will likely be ignored. That goes for subject lines in your emails too. Here are some pointers when crafting your messages:
  • Write the copy first; then craft the headline or subject line.
  • Limit each heading to one main idea.
  • Use the 4 U's formula and try to hit as many as you can. Make the heading Useful, Unique, Urgent, Ultra specific (details here)
  • Take your time. Write out multiple headlines; narrow the list and test them on your colleagues and proof-readers.

Just in case you missed it...

To a child - love is spelled T-I-M-E

To the world, you may be just one person... but to one person, you just might be the world!

This is a message for all parents - stick around for the punch line - it's just 4 minutes.
Have a safe, fun summer. You're welcome (and encouraged) to share this with your friends.

In the corporate world, "this won't take long" doesn't necessarily mean it will be quick.

Corporate Time Equivalents by Marco Kaye. A sample:

>  "Just a minute" = 10 minutes
>  "Could use a hand" = 1 week
>  "Help out" = 1 month + 2

     harrowing weeks
>  "Let's revisit this later" = never

shall we speak of this again

 >  "ASAP" is unquantifiable
