Three SMBA Members Make Panel Sent to Governor
The 31st Circuit Judicial Commission met today and conducted public interviews of eight applicants for the vacancy created by the retirement of Circuit Judge Dan Conklin. Following the interviews the Commission met to select a panel of three nominees to send to Governor Jay Nixon for his consideration. That panel is the Honorable Mark Powell, the Honorable Jason Brown and the Honorable Margaret Holden.
Brown and Powell are currently associate circuit judges for Greene County. Holden is Chief Administrative Law Judge at Missouri Division of Workers' Compensation.
Governor Nixon has 60 days to appoint the new judge.
The SMBA would like to thank the members of the Thirty-First Circuit Judicial Commission who serve in that capacity as volunteers. The commissioners are: the Honorable William W. Francis, Jr., Andrew Bennett, Steve Garner, Steven Stepp and Joann Hosmer.

July SMBA Member CLE Lunch: Implicit Bias and Access to Justice
Presented by Wesley Pratt
July 15, 2015, 11:45, The Tower Club, 1MCLE (register)
Everyone is biased. Part of being human is having personal preferences and inclinations. But when those inclinations manifest in explicit bias that results in unfair treatment, our profession and courts must and have intervened. As our society makes strides in eliminating explicit bias, we must also take note that not all bias is explicit. Equal access to justice requires that we become educated on implicit bias. Understanding on how unconscious factors shape our attitudes and decision-making is crucial in becoming a society that promotes equal justice to all Americans. Registrants are encouraged to set aside a few minutes before the presentation to take two of the implicit association tests on gender and skin tone at this link.
