State Auditor Tom Schweich is a fifth-generation Missourian and a graduate of St. Louis County Public Schools, Yale, and Harvard Law School. Schweich practiced law for over 20 years in St. Louis at the law firm of Bryan Cave LLP.
Schweich began his public service career investigating the notorious siege at Waco, Texas as part of Jack Danforth's Special Counsel investigation. Schweich then served as Chief of Staff to three United States Ambassadors to the United Nations and as Deputy Director and Acting Director of the law enforcement division of the U.S. State Department where he oversaw the activities of 4,000 people in over 40 countries with an annual budget of $2.5 billion. In March 2007, President Bush appointed Schweich U.S. Ambassador for Counternarcotics and Justice Reform in Afghanistan During his service in the State Department, he led diplomatic missions to approximately 30 countries.

Application Process for New Associate Judge
The 31st Circuit Judicial Commission is accepting applications for the new Associate Circuit Judge of the 31st Judicial Circuit (Greene County), pursuant to the creation of that position by the General Assembly. Information on the application process is available on the web at

President Obama Nominates Harpool for Federal Bench
SMBA member Doug Harpool is President Barack Obama's nominee to the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. Harpool, a shareholder at the law firm Baird, Lightner, Millsap & Harpool, PC since 2006 served as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1983 to 1992. He received his J.D. in 1980 from the University of Missouri Columbia School of Law and his B.S. cum laude in 1977 from Missouri State University. Harpool is currently serving on the SMBA Board of Directors and is chair of the SMBA Federal Bench and Bar Committee. If confirmed, Harpool will serve the U.S. District Court, Western District of Missouri, which spans sixty six counties.
